I signed up with Flick as well when I moved back to my old place a couple of weeks back.  So far so good. Still adjusting a few schedules for things like DVS/Air Warmer around the cheaper times to run.

@k14 - do you know if there is a publicly available RSS feed or similar for spot prices at all?  Time/money/etc providing I'm planning on putting some home automation stuff in and it would be cool to tweak settings automatically if power prices skyrocket at any given point.

Edit: PS - for anyone coming up to speed with spot pricing - http://www.ea.govt.nz/dmsdocument/13830 makes for a good read on the pros/cons.

Any updates based on further experience? I'm interested in this, generally happy to time shift major power uses.

Obviously morning and evening will be peak times for power. How are weekends? What are the risks - huge spikes in cost because of a failure somewhere could blow the power bill out hugely if we're not aware of it, though it would only be occasional.

I just noticed you have to have a smart meter - can they fit one or is that done independently of the power company by say a lines company?

Nothing on their site about buy back from your PV panels.



Just had confirmation from them today that "Unfortunately we are not certified to buy back export generation at the moment, and that means we can’t service a property like yours right now.". But they do go on to say that they may become certified in the future.

They have something like 800 customers according to a newspaper article.  It will take time to get leverage for buyback contracts etc.  But they are likely to start off with great deals while they build the business.  At least there is no term contract, you can leave as soon as it does not work for you any more.

I'm actually a little surprised they only have 800 customers.  I've had the occasional spike in price here and there, but by and large it's been pretty good. Their estimates usually put me at between 2% & 7% saved over the standard power rate pricing on a weekly basis.

Now it's starting to get a bit colder I guess we'll see how the prices stack up, but mines offset somewhat given I'm primarily Gas for heating, so it hopefully won't change dramatically - although given it's spot rates if the demand spikes on a cold day, my standby/general running will increase accordingly.

I must admit I don't actively look for savings, current lifestyle meant that I do washing and cleaning etc off peak anyway - and prices over summer is noticeably  higher compared to winter. Most of my cost at the moment is the fixed rate charges.

At this stage Flick represents a company that has far better service than what I got out of the Genesis, Mercury, Meridian relationship. All of them were hopeless until I told them I was moving on and they started being nice and taking notice.

That is just a dashboard - you might be interested in the Wholesale Price reports page based on date range

Not that simple and really this will be where the model they are using will be put to the test, The spot price you pay depends on the Grid Exit Point your in. Whilst OTA is used often in the contracts market and as an overall thermometer for the market it's not what the retailers pay.

What I'm yet to see and may have missed is how they propose to deal with the grid CAN/GEN/WRN notices that can spike pricing 10-20 times normal over 15 minute windows, I've seen the spot market for a GXP spike to $20/kwh or $2k/mwh for 15 minutes when a major line has gone down during peak time.

WITS's is a good system to keep an eye on
