My mistake, I thought you could specify any hour (even peak hours) as your hour of power. I agree with you, but that's only if people shift their normal usage to the hour of power. As we've already seen, people see it as a challenge to use as much power as possible. For example, you may normally run one heater, but with the hour of power you decide to run one in every room of the house.

Yes you can do that cos you can. But if the desire is reduce the bill, we would want to shift what we will use anyway, to the free hour. I can see some tiring of that, and others making it the norm to run the washing machine and dishwasher same time every night, give the rooms a free boost of heat. Its not a magic bullet, but its something very worthwhile

Forecast is for it to be above 100c until after 9pm, for Christchurch at least.

Same for Auckland (incl. GST).  A very crappy day.

Got this message on the electric kiwi website when trying to signup "Thanks for your interest in joining Electric Kiwi. Due to the current high volume of customers joining Electric Kiwi, in order to keep delivering our award-winning customer service, we are temporarily limiting new customers in some areas at this time. Check back soon as we expect to be on top of demand before too long."

I get the same, but when I try the address of our two next-door neighbours (non-Flick customers), they are both accepted.  I guess it's clear, EK is rejecting only Flick customers at the moment.  They are making an incorrect assumption that people will jump ship (back to Flick) when spot prices stabilise.  Not impressed

Oh wow, that's unreal. I just tried entering my address in EK's join site (I'm with Flick) and I get the "limiting new customers in certain areas, check back soon" message. I put in my neighbor's address, literally right next door, and it says "Good news! You can join!" That's a bit crap.

Same for me. Also with Flick.

Tried Meridian and am able to signup, but won't yet. Will stick with Flick for a little while longer. In the long run, I'm pretty sure Flick is still the cheapest there is.

I'm wondering how true this holds for 2017.  I'm burning through the savings we've made with Flick all year at an alarming rate and we still have 2+ weeks of July.  We will probably break even at the end of the year or make a few bucks but it's caused for a very miserable winter.

Adding GST adds insult to injury since it's a percentage.  The $1+/kwh rates today and yesterday means an extra 15c/h goes to taxes.

When compared to last year when we had the occasional spike for 2-3 hours, this year has been the total opposite with 2-3 hours of reasonable prices late at night and by 5am, the prices climb steadily.  40c prices are now a bargain!

I'll probably stick around too.  In the end, they're delivering exactly what they promised.  Market value plus a small markup.  Not really their fault if the energy market has gone haywire.

On the other hand, the EK message about "certain areas" implying "Flick customers" is downright pathetic.

What's the attraction with EK?

If short term, why not go to Powershop? Cheaper rates, at least in CHCH for low users, & $50/mth discount across first 3 months, all with no contract.

Also interestingly, I jumped ship from Flick a few weeks back & EK wouldn't accept me at the time, but I am now allowed to move to EK from Powershop.

Well in EK's defense it holds true as I know many people who have switched to EK who will likely switch back so I can see why they're doing this. I am going to stay with EK as they're pretty good to deal with + having a constant price is more important for me due to who lives with me. For example, it was almost $1 per unit during my hour of free power last night and yet I had the heatpump, heaters, dryer, dishwasher, washing machine all on as well as hot water heating - total draw was around 40a and yet I would say would have cost EK a bit.

Doesn't make business sense to allow customers who won't stick around.

@drewchad Powershop is pretty expensive if you don't prepay everything.

I can't blame EK really, I wouldn't want to accept immediate loss-leading customers who are more likely to be continuously looking for the cheapest rate, and potentially will jump ship when the peaks are over.
