Saw an online ad for ElectricKiwi today. Their comparison tool would lead me to believe they could cut our current provider, PowerShop, by 10%.

Anyone else looked at them, or use them?

checked my Address and was told they couldn't provide me with service as I'm either not in a covered area or that I don't have a smart meter 

then I read this ......

 

Major network coverage

 

Powering throughout New Zealand.


Pretty sure Hawkes Bay is a major network and yes I do have a smart meter

How much of your usage can you time shift? As they offer 1 hour per day of free power. So they would work really well for some people. And be a waste of time for others.

I got as far as their terrible website and said nope not for me. They have one of the worst designed sites I have seen in years and does not enspire trust at all.

did a compare and energyonline were cheaper + not having to use the "hour of power" thing.

How much labour is needed to manage accounts like Power Shop. It always seemed to me to be a bit of a pain.

Typing one handed on a tablet one takes what one can get. Disabilities are a pain :(

Just compared EK with TrustPower in Whakatane. Taking my last month's usage and rounding it up to the next hundred kWh, both ended up being the same price, down to the cent! It seems that EK will actually be more expensive than TrustPower in winter due to the higher per-kWh price.

I've also had this 'issue'. I'm in Tauranga, and they wont sign me up because I don't have smart meter, they also will not install a smart meter.

Their suggestion was that I should sign up with another provider (with no contract duration), and get them to install the smart meter. I thought this was pretty rude (to the poor company that invests in my smart meter), and wasn't keen.

Instead I've signed up with Nova, who have a very low rate too, plus will install a smart meter for me "when we're doing your area next".

I did a comparison of what this ElectricKiwi would cost have compared me to my current provider (Flick) since I joined them in April, and this shows ElectricKiwi would have been on average 13% more expensive.

This doesn't account for the 'free' hour of power, though, but that would not make a huge difference as I can't do much to shift usage (gas hot water, don't regularly use a drier or dishwasher).

Two things about that 'free hour':
* the hours that can be chosen (2-3pm or 10-11) aren't that useful for many power-hungy things such as heating (guess they'd work well if you're crazy enough/have not choice but to use a drier)
* a box on the the site's calculator can be ticked to assume savings for this hour - and I think it's 8%. Now that assumes some significant usage shifting to get that level of savings.

Given I haven't yet gone through a summer with Flick I'm not sure whether it'll continue to provide the cheapest overall power, but at this stage I don't think ElectricKiwi's worth it in our case...

When was this? They installed a smart meter for me six months ago, in Wellington. I suspect they have to sign up contractors to do this in each city.

Their initial suggestion to join another company then move to them was a bit dishonest.
