When I got early retirement from Ford Research & Engineering Centre in the UK aged just 52, the one thing I really missed was access to a proper workshop.  That was 14 years ago, and while tools are a fraction of what they cost when I started in engineering, there are very few of us lucky enough to have a well equipped shed/workshop in the garden.  A few weeks ago I was chatting to one of the old guys who work in Blenheim's Bunnings, and he mentioned the Menz Shed.  I knew there has been on in Picton for several years, but a) I thought it was only into woodwork, and making boats sort of projects, and b) it's too far from where I live in Rapaura.

It turns out that there has been a Menz Shed in Blenheim for a few years (I actually have no idea exactly how long) but what was interesting is the Blenheim shed is adding an engineering extension.  The building is done, but the inside not painted, and won't be fully equipped from the get go, but it will eventually have mill lathe, sheet metal working tools, bandsaw, etc.  The first thing is going to be a very decent welder with Mig, Tig, and Arc — I think it is going to be at least as good as the one in my old workshop at Fords!

For $25 a year the shed is open three days a week, and you can pop in as and when you need to.  You'll have access to thicknesser/planer, bandsaw, circular saws, bench drills, etc. and the lads are as friendly as you like.  I am super pleased to have discovered mine, so check the National site to see if there is one near you.
