Can someone shed some light on cost of labor for custom made curtains and blinds? I can buy material from spotlight or similar but I really want to know how much will labor costs for making curtains and blinds. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Curtains can be CRAZY expensive, I had a friend who spent $10K to get them for the whole house. This is with good quality material, thermal, blackout, all the way to the ground - which is usually necessary if you want them to insulate well.

My folks are getting new basic curtains for their place and its costing $3k+, providing a curtain maker with your material will probably ramp up the labor costs (because they missing out on the material costs) making it around the same price anyway.

Our previous house we tried to get curtains, went to the curtain warehouse, guess what? Not enough stock. Only had a few pathetic bits on shelves, were told, what is on shelves is it. This time time around we went to 'The Blind Man' and got them done there. Great job, blinds and drapes. And the good thing is they are made up here. Employing local staff, so great stuff. I've hang so many myself, never again!

You don't mention which location, but if in Auckland try Dial a Drape, we have had 3 households of blinds and curtains, but what we paid would be a few years old and houses are different sizes.

We used Harrisons to get new curtains and roman blinds recently. We were initially quoted around $10K to cover the entire house, including installation. That was way out of budget, so we ended up getting curtains installed in our main living room and 3 bedrooms only. This cost around $6000 all up.

For the other rooms not covered (two offices, second living area, dining area, spare bedroom), we ended up installing roller blinds from The Blind Store. They cost around $1800, but I had to install them myself (very easy, and I'm far from what I'd describe a handyman). I was very happy with the service and quality of these, and they took around 15 working days to be made and couriered (for free) to us.

What sort of blinds, because roller blinds are pricey, and you can also get motorised ones. You can DIY them from some places like Spotlight. BUt even the parts to DIY them are pretty pricey. Not a huge amount of competition in that area. Even if you get them professionally made, they can be poorly done. A family member got some done  by one of these big curtain companies, and the patterns didn't line up, they got redone, and the same problem, so they ended up getting a refund. I don't think the people that make them get paid all that much, so you maybe better to employ someone directly, rather than going through a big chain.
