This belt sander is older than I am, but I am quite attached to it (it was my Dad's favourite tool).

Is this likely to be terminal, or is it conceivable it could be fixed for something less than twice the original purchase price? Any suggestions on where to start (even if that is the name of a Wellington Makita service agent)?

EDIT: grumble. Can't get the embedded video to play.

Video finally published. Have you checked the brushes?

sounds like the brushes are worn out, problem is it may have already damaged the armature, this is not really a DIY fix, take it to a service agent, may not be worth fixing

All my woodworking power tools have had bearings that clogged up with dust before the brushes wore out. The seal that keeps grease in doesn't seem to manage to keep Rimu or Customwood dust out.

One cheap $39 sander had a bearing that would have cost $20 to replace at Wellington prices. It got parked until another supplier turned up.
