We use a timer which turns hot water cylinder off overnight & starts at 9.00am which is the first free hour available. This will guarantee you get the full free hour. Sparky just fitted a timer in the fuse box inside. timer looks like a single circuit breaker. Simple to change time if required. Our savings with EK are averaging out over a full year at 15-20% by using Dryer. Washing machine & hot water during the free hour.

I might do that next winter for the bottom element, although I'd like it at the mains plug as the cylinder is handy. I have had the top element on for the free hour at 9pm and also at 4pm for an hour as a boost. The Solar HW has a timer in the panel for the top element but the bottom element is hard wired mains plug

What I find is if I heat the bottom element so that there is a bigger gap between the solar collector and the bottom, it does a faster job than the +8 degree pump transfer over time.
