Is it stuck open or closed?

If open Draino (powder/crystals not liquid) will deal to hair, fatty deposits and general goop.  Read the label.

I don't see the benefits of these fittings.  In my experience they cause more problems than they solve.

Closed, but the lid is unscrewed and is now open. Ill add that to the box of tricks. I feel we are hard water here from other symptoms, but it all helps

A friend was suggested to soak the mechanism in vineger which I am going to try when I find it again. I had it in the car as I toured all sorts of plumbing places to find a match, so I am guessing its lost in all the mess in the car.

I've got these in my house.

The one in bath is very frustrating because small child sits on it and it unlocks so child moves and water starts draining. Solution was to put a very shallow bowel over plug then place novelty bath mat over the top.

Our unit had a spring arrangement looking very much like a spark plug which was screwed into the underside of the cap and then down into the deep dark recesses of the plug. Very hard to get out to replace as stuck down distally. Lots hot water in the end.

But mitre10 and other shops not sold the spring/locking component so had to buy whole unit which I threw away.

Not going to get these if redo bathroom. Pretty but annoying and not hold water seal well.
