I've just started to get into wood working as a hobby, and started making some garage cabinets, will be moving on to making a fitted wardrobe, coffee tables, end tables etc.  So need to find a good place to buy timber from.  I'm in Papakura/south auckland.

For my cabinets in the garage I used non structural plywood for the carcass from bunnings, this was quite cheap at $60 for 18mm 2400x1200.  But its terrible for painting/staining.  I made the doors out of MDF (also from bunnings).  But the selection at bunnings/mitre 10 is really quite poor and they dont have really anything for cabinet making etc.

For nicer plywood Ive found, which seem to have a pretty decent selection and priced ok.

But for just general timber for face frames, table legs etc.  anyone have any recommendations where to go?  clear pine cheap would work well for face frames, some hardwoods would be nice for other projects etc.

Preferably somewhere south of the CBD, closer to papakura the better obviously.  But really dont want to drive to west auckland or the shore to pickup wood.

This is what I made

The top was a large block from Bunnings, which wasnt too badly priced.  I made the stupid mistake of not stiring the varnish (first time I had used varnish - and the make the writing so small on the can) so the main top has a nice colour and the mitre saw top is a darker red, but is the same varnish :) but this is why I started in the garage, for practice.

I'm planning on door wall hung cabinets and pegboard as the next project.

sometimes building sites will let you take scrap wood offcuts - sometimes there's quite reasonable grade / quality wood etc there. Do ask first :-)

Plywood - much the same position as you - Penrose is the place. MrPlyman

Google found this at East Tamaki - a bit closer to Papakura

Have you looked into joining the Men’s shed?

The are about 10 mins before Waiuku from Pukekohe, so would be very close and they share access to an amazing variety of tools (like a lathe) that home DIY rarely allows.

I think it was something like $10-15 per quarter to belong, about 5 years ago...

*edit... they’ve undergone some changes but here’s the new version:

fwiw I have been looking for wood (framing for a deck so its not necessarily comparible for what you are after), and looked into prices with these guys:

  • Timber Dealers
  • Macclures ITM
  • Whitecliffs
  • Placemakers
  • Bunnings
  • Timberman

The list is ordered by price, so cheapest (for what I was looking for) is at the top, and most expensive at the bottom.
