johno1234:

Inherited a brand new LG dishwasher that came with our house. It has the flat cutlery tray in the top which I have removed to allow the top cup tray to be raised to its highest level and still fit wine glasses, and allowing larger dinner plates to fit in the bottom tray. Had to find a 3rd party cutlery basket and jam it into the bottom tray.

The default power on cycle is 3 hours which is ridiculous.

Would not recommend.

I’ve been looking at dishwashers as we’re replacing our kitchen, and I was pleased to see that many brands have moved away from the cutlery tray, or if they still have it some also come with a basket. A stupid idea that seems to have had its time in the sun…

I love the cutlery tray, I wouldn't buy a dishwasher without one. So much more convenient than a basket. Delicate glasses like wine glasses we always hand wash, dishwashers are harsh and wear glasses more quickly than a hand wash.

Impressed with the 29 year Miele, did it need any repairs in that time? Our Bosch 6 series is 10 years old and has been repaired 3 times for things like minor leaks and handle coming off, next time there's any problem it's being replaced. We'd get another Bosch. Wash cycle options from an hour to three hours, not sure what the default is but I use the 2 hour 5 min heavy cycle mostly.

LookingUp: The cause of death was a corroded element, which finally ruptured, and most probably caused the leak.  While this may have been repairable, if we could source an element for a 29 year old appliance,

While you aren't interested this time there is a company in Auckland that makes replacement elements copying your sample. It would depend on them being able to transfer over mounting bits.

I recently had to replace our aged Fisher & Paykel dishwasher after the door hinge snapped and after the feedback in this thread among other things, we opted for a Bosch Series 6 (in lovely Black Inox).

Things I love: it's so damn quiet; 3rd cutlery draw is good for flat odd items, adjustable height 2nd draw

Things I don't love: capacitive buttons are super sensitive; child lock only works while running, not switched off

FYI from my research when buying, there are 2 sub-Series 6 models currently (last 4 digits are freestanding/built-under and colour codes):

Bosch SMS6HA**** (i.e. https://pricespy.co.nz/product.php?p=5864824)

And

Bosch SMS6HC**** (i.e. https://pricespy.co.nz/product.php?p=5864701)

The key diffs of HC over HA model is:

15 place setting vs 14

3rd/Cutlery draw

2 extra programmes (Express Wash and ExtraQuiet)

buttons on outside of door vs on inside of door

I live in a small apartment which has a single F&P dish drawer integrated into the cabinetry. I hate it.

Is there anything else that would fit the same space? Or are just drawers just an F&P thing? Unfortunately there is no way a normal size dishwasher would fit.

Ok, shows you how well I’d looked at the specific model we’ve chosen, which is the SMP6HCB01A (https://pricespy.co.nz/product.php?p=11531357). I’d stupidly assumed it was a flat-fronted/built-in variation of the other one I’d looked at, which must have been an HA as it didn’t have the cutlery draw. But as per the model number the one we’re getting is clearly an HC and so has the damn cutlery tray (but also comes with a basket). @ShinyChrome - is it relatively easy to remove the tray if we dislike it as much as we have with other machines?

@alasta: What is it particular you hate about it, and is it really that bad?!

I need talking out of going with a double dish drawer (this one) as I am really attracted by the ability to do small loads more regularly (we don’t fill ours particularly fast). And this is despite what I’ve read here and elsewhere about reliability, and Consumer’s poor opinion of them in terms of reliability and customer satisfaction. While my head says stick with the Bosch, I’m still being pulled the other way.

As to your question: in visiting various stores I didn’t see any other brands of half-height dishwashers, though I did see a few narrower machines (maybe 450mm?) - but they’re clearly no use to go into an existing space.

Problems with my dishdrawer:

  • The touch sensitive controls get triggered completely at random, which often results in the dishwasher waking me up in the middle of the night with bleeping noises arising from the ghost button presses. I assume this is due to the boneheaded design whereby the buttons are on the inside, hence are often wet after a cycle has run.
  • Because of the above problem, the dishwasher often starts running a cycle uncommanded when closing it. I therefore have to leave the door ajar whenever it is not in use.
  • Because the touch sensitive controls are on the inside of the dishwasher it is impossible to interrupt it when it is running. So, if it starts running uncommanded then your stuff is stuck in there for upwards of two hours. Supposedly if you tap the door twice from the outside it will stop and unlock, but this feature doesn't work.
  • The drying function is completely ineffective.

Thanks, I had a feeling this was the case so I'll just have to put up with it for now. It's a really awkward space to have to shoehorn a dishwasher into.

Sounds like a fault. Did you contact the manufacture as surely it is covered under the CGA?

It depends on where the dishdrawer is. For example I removed one from my wife's office kitchen where it was above a drawer unit. Taking the drawer out left a standard 600mm wide gap that took the replacement dishwasher. If the dishdrawer was below a sink bowl on the other hand you wouldn't get a full height recess with it out.

You may consider a dishwasher with a built-in food grinder. It means less clogging, and can handle dirtier dishes.

These on manufacturers that have them
  • Bosch
  • Maytag
  • KitchenAid
  • GE
  • Kenmore

Which Dishwashers Have Food Grinders?

You may want to consider a dishwasher that's quieter, has a low db rating.

I'd rather stay in NZ. Most of those brands look American. I'm not sure when the article was written but Bosch have apparently dropped the grinder.

We replaced an AEG Integrated Dishwasher with an Electrolux Under Bench model in Dec 2022 (Model: ESF8735ROX). The controls are at the top of the door and it throws a red light onto the kitchen floor whilst washing and a green light when it has finished. We always wait until the green light has disappeared otherwise the contents are too hot.

We soon removed the cutlery tray and used the old AEG basket.

Personally, the AEG was a better design. Perhaps NZ Wine Glasses are much longer in length than elsewhere, because we can only fit glasses into two of the 6 slots available. I immediately thought that I was getting less crockery etc. into the Electrolux (naturally the basket doesn't really help for pots and pans).

It cleans very well and there is a quick 38 minute wash cycle which does a good job.

We have always had AEG Dishwashers but the Electrolux doesn't impress me.
