I want to make a barrel bolt like this one lockable: https://www.bunnings.co.nz/windsor-brass-100mm-necked-barrel-bolt-satin-chrome_p00296539 Once the bolt is closed if I put a padlock at the top would that work?

As long as the padlock prevents the bolt from retracting too far, then yes it will effectively lock it - within reason, i.e. strength of the material the lock is going into.

No, that will be rather difficult to secure with a padlock. They make larger ones that do, but not as "attractive" - generally galvanised rather than chromed.

Edit to add: if you do put a padlock through that one, it will provide a very easy way to twist and break the housing.

So your saying a twist of a padlock could easily break that bolts housing? I want to put some locks on a wardrobe door but a patio bolt does not look right. Do you have another suggestion?

Ge0rge raises a valid point, if you're trying to secure something critical, this wouldn't provide nearly enough strength. Normally you would see something a bit stronger - https://www.bunnings.co.nz/zenith-long-shoot-padbolt-150x10mm-zinc-plated_p00297606

Although you may want to also have one designed to hide the screws to stop easy removal.

You might be able to fit the hasp of a small padlock through the loop at the end when it's locked. (At the right hand end in the picture.) Depending on the way the lock was fitted, it might prevent the bolt from sliding back far enough to open.

I need something with strength while also being attractive. A patio bolt is too bulky.

Edit: A nice looking chrome hasp might work.

I don't think you can get that combination, I've got the stainless steel one of those and they're for keeping a door/gate from flapping open, not security. The brass one you linked to will be even worse, you can probably bend/break/snap that with a screwdriver blade.

What sort of threat are you trying to counter?

Have you considered something like this instead? You can do away with the padlock all together.

If it's for doors that swing open rather than a sliding door, what about putting the D handles of your choice on and putting a padlock through them when you're away?

It looks pretty tricky to that with these ones, but in that case something like the patio bolt would be more ideal.

That would have been my response as well, you're probably never going to get a high-security solution if what you're going to secure is a wardrobe.

Another option if the tracks is exposed is to drop a piece of timber into it and secure it into place with a patio bolt, or bolts at both ends. When you're there, take it out and put it in the wardrobe so there's no sign of it.
