You could try some macrocarpa from a sawmill? Sometimes called "Poor mans Kauri". You would have to dress it yourself, but it comes out a nice golden colour when oiled.

NZ oregon/ douglas fir is readily available at independent merchants around Christchurch for around $3/m for 90x45 D4S. Great stuff to work with - untreated, straighter than pine.

Might be able to pick some up next time you visit, or have a bunch shipped down

Sounds perfect, any merchants in particular you could recommend?

My go-to was Kenneally, but Baier and Musgroves also sell it for a similar price (I've been away from Chch for a couple of years how

How is it in terms of dealing with sap? My parents' place, built with a ton of Douglas Fir, had portions that oozed sap for quite awhile.

Interesting - I never noticed sap from it, made a bed base out of it so probably would have noticed if there was sap

Bit of a duh moment after I posted, I assume any recent stuff is kiln-treated to evaporate the resin components that are liquid at room temperature (along with general drying). My parents' place was built back when they used stone adzes to do the timber, so unlikely to be kiln-dried/treated.
