BlueShift:

You could try http://agpest.co.nz/ it'll help ID your weed, and if you find any cool bugs, it'll ID them too!

Thanks for that. Unfortunately it's not on there, but in any case now that I know what the mature form is I know I don't want it so will be removing them on the weekend.

ubernoob:

this???

That certainly looks like it. Given the vigorous growth and lush green foliage I figured it was something of Asian origin. If anyone on the North Shore wants a bunch of these - they make great indoor plants, hardy and lots of greenery, if confined to a pot - let me know before I mulch them.

I don’t think it’s  Radermachera sinica (aka China Doll and Canton Lace). We have several of these which we planted on a boundary for privacy - now 6-7m high. The leaves droop downward (yours appear to be upward), are in groups rather than pairs and grow off a subsidiary stem rather than an upward pointing main stem.

Could be wrong (again) but they look different.

neb: I've identified the mature form, it's a bushlike tree: That one's next to a bus stop and frequently cut back so it doesn't look like much at the moment, it has a reasonably sizeable trunk. Here's a closeup of the leaves with a hand to scale: So it is a tree, and not something I want in that area. The ferns are there by design, they fill in the shady area under the tree ferns and keep the weeds at bay, but the tree thing is unwanted.

That does look like China Doll - but doesn’t look like your OP photo.

Could it be purple monkey apple?

Try using this key.  It is a bit hard to narrow it down using the photo

It's definitely that, the leaves are identical, I brought a sprig back to check. The ones in my photo may look a bit different in a general photo because they're juvenile plants.

Yes but sorry, juvenile China Doll looks like this. It has drooping leaves, not arranged in pairs, on subsidiary stems. Unless I’m looking at the the wrong plant in your OP, yours has paired leaves pointing upward off an upward pointing main stem.

Titoki has serrated leaves - plant in OP photo does not.

It could be Toxicodendron succedaneum (Japanese wax tree), although the leaves don't seem quite right. Same with Robinia pseudoacacia (Black locust/false acacia). More closeup of leaves might have helped, and maybe the bark and any flowers etc on the mature tree you found. At least we are sure it couldn't stay where it was.

Time to find a new industry!
