Lizard1977:

Thanks for that.  It looks like the 90min product might be available at Bunnings.

It says ideal for first and second coats.  What would I use for the third and final coat?

For me, I operate on a gently - gently basis until I'm 'almost there' so it can work out to be dozens of thin coats. That can be the beauty of living there - come home from work and touch up the difficult area, let it dry over tea/bed time and maybe a once over before bed.

But yes, for finishing, there's the one you posted earlier or a similar GIB product "Plus 4". You probably can make do with a small bucket (4 l) for one room. Once again, it's not expensive = $15-20 or so.

Re the cable. Standard cable will be vulnerable to moisture ingress if the insulation is nicked so take extra care of it when feeding it into the conduit or generally handling it.

Went down to Mitre10 and Bunnings.  Neither have any TradeSet in stock.  I noticed that Mitre10 have Gib MaxSet though.  It seems to be similar to TradeSet 90, but it says scraping "only while green", and I'm not sure what that means.  Would this be suitable for my needs?

Mitre10 also have Gib Trade Finish Extra Lite (15L) available for click and collect, which I presume I could use for my finish coat?

Hmm sorry, I never used anything beyond those products. Remember when you could walk in anytime and get anything? Ahhh, those were the days.

Any hoo - "scraping" ? FWIW, I never did any scraping ......

"Extra lite" - I presume that means 'even easier to sand off' ?

Is there a product matrix for easy comparison?

You desperately need to watch some videos on the process.  Gib has a good series.  I also think you are likely to not be overly impressed with your finish, given your lack of experience.

Scraping is the process of knocking off excess using the broad knife.  The max set is tougher, and so you cannot do it when its dry, with tradeset you can.  What is your plan for taping corners?  I would recommend using STRAITFLEX Corner Tape.  It will hold your hand on one of the most difficult aspects of stopping.  For your horizontal joins I would recommend Gib Roctape as a beginner.  Just use plus4 for your finishing plaster (top coat) or similar from another brand.

It is surprising there is no trade set at all.  Other hardware stores stock it too.

We won't be in a position to do any gib stopping for a couple of weekends at least, so hopefully there will be some tradeset available locally by then.  But in the meantime, to ensure we have something to work with in the event that supplies are still not available, I've ordered two 15L pails of the Extra Lite for click and collect later today.  The Gib selector chart here shows the differences, and it seems like the main one is that it says that it is good for warmer weather.  While we're not exactly sunbathing here right now, neither is it freezing so I'm hoping it will be fine.

Yes, as complete noobs to gib stopping I'm not expecting fantastic results.  But everyone has to start somewhere, so we will do the best we can and learn as we go.  I've looked at a few videos online (both Gib and Mitre10 Easy As series) many times over, and they are good for getting a sense of the process, and some tips to watch for.  The tip about using the corner tape is a good one, and we'll get some of that for the corner sections, as well as using a corner trowel.  Will the result be perfect?  Probably not.  Will it be better than what was there before?  Almost certainly.

Unsurprisingly, the Gib Extra Lite that I ordered isn't actually in stock, so that isn't an option.  Will have to keep an eye out for when Tradeset and Plus 4 is back in stock.

I am not a fan of the corner trowel, but each to their own.  The beauty of that straightflex is it can be sanded without feathering like happens if you sand too deeply on paper tape.  My biggest mistake a s noob was having my tradeset too thick, think yogurt consistency, thats where Tradeset 90 is key, gives you much more time.  Obviously only mix up what you need.  And always use a paint mixer like this to make up your batches.  Only other tip is sand away the excess, dont put up with a non smooth finish.  Once its painted it is 10 times harder to sand back to flat.

They do. And I suggest a good place to start is somewhere like behind a door, or under where the couch goes etc.

Remember, you don't have to go to university to be a plasterer so, how hard can it be?

Another question from earlier in the thread which I don't think has been answered - what is the right approach regarding installing insulation in the wall cavity adjoining the bathroom area?  With the wall linings off we can see the pipes that feed the shower (see photos from the earlier posts).  There wasn't any insulation there before, so is it okay to install insulation around those pipes?

I've got a copy of NZS 4246:2006.

It's very vague. Relevant sections are:

6.3 Sheet products are cut to keep 100mm gap around pipes (for repair).

So what about blanket or batt products?

It doesn't specifically mention what to do with pipes for these insulation products.

It does mention that hot pipes can be insulated with their own speciality products so one might infer a hot pipe could be happily abutted by a batt.

But what about a cold pipe? They must be insulated in very cold areas (zone 3) so does that mean they can be insulated anywhere else? With a batt?

Abutting pipes in walls with batts is not specifically mentioned as a 'shall not' so where to from here.....

I was an insulation auditor a lot of years ago. I'm long removed from the industry but from memory.... Section 6 is for ceilings so isn't applicable in walls. Section 5 says you should fit snugly up to / around cables and pipes in walls. You will need a gap in ceilings and floors if you're playing with insulation there.

Ideally the only sanding you should need is to give the plaster a similar surface finish to the paper. It makes much less mess to scrape excess off while plaster is just set.

Lizard1977, the supply of Tradeset must be fairly dynamic. Bunnings now show Tradeset 90 available at Tremaine Ave (if that's where you are). If they don't have what I want I'm usually in and out of Wgtn from Foxton once a week so pass another 3 branches. You get used to checking their app.

Regarding gaps around insulation and pipes. I'm just doing our floor at the moment. Shades of the Great Escape tunnelling through the sand to get access. I've taken the 100mm gap to be around penetrations through floor where you'd get the inevitable dribble of water if you disconnected the trap etc.

I rang Bunnings Tremaine Ave today and they said the stock on their website was set aside for another customer and they had no more available.  They reckoned it would be about 3 weeks before they would have stock.

Getting desperate, I scoured Google for another place that had it in stock.  A place called Colorex claim to have stock and will ship.  A 20kg bag would be $52 incl. GST and shipping.  Looks like that's my only choice for now.  But even they don't have any of the top coat products.

If I understand your photos correctly, the wall containing the shower plumbing adjoins another conditioned space, so you don't need to insulate the wall. You could insulate the hot pipes, but even that's not required unless it's a circulating loop.
