So I called the sales advisor but he said I could only get ADSL. However, I can get excellent 4G mobile speeds from the same location.  A little confused now :(

Yes they're correct.

This will be due to the lack of capacity or you are in a rural area. If you are rural then your options are either ADSL or 4G RBI. 4G RBI providers are both expensive options however they are an option. You won't get One NZ FWA as you're not in the right area. You'll only get referred to RBI(Farmside in this case) if you wanted it served via 4G.

As per my previous post the other reasons why you would not be able to get it is simply due to a stop sell in the area as we need to also give mobile users a decent chunk of the pie too.

My apologies that this was not the answer you're looking for, however the plan(the provider and what they can offer) is very much the first thing you need to nail first before planning out your network topology.

You need a proper FWA solution and this sounds like you're in the RBI area so if be looking at 4G RBI providers for that FWA solution (i.e Farmside) or the alternative solutions such as Starlink.

I use quic. They're a great ISP for techies. Use my referral I get money off my bill! You can get the setup fee waived too via this code when you order! R177510EBNVXP

This looks like a bad idea. Grab a 4g modem, hook up some external antenna, add a PoE switch and some access points and you will be golden.

What an incredible coincidence. We used to flat together in Albany. How are you mate?

Ha, small country. I'm well and Institute says hi. I should have noticed the handle and "jerry-pc" in the diagram.

Any reason to not consider starlink?

Weather, cost.

Starlink isn't really affected by weather, and the monthly cost is sort of similar to RBI connections. The one off hardware cost for starlink is much lower than it used to be... My opinion though

Yeah, just talked with my brother, and we're now thinking Starlink as primary, individual cells as back up.

Thank you everyone :)

Does anyone know where Starlink gets shipped from and how it takes to arrive? Am wanting to try and time it so it gets there a day or 2 after we move in.

Moving to the country (gonna eat a lot of peaches).

Nothing out there but ADSL 🤮 according to the ISP's that I have contacted.

However, the 4g Mobile coverage and speed is excellent.

So, I'm thinking, can we use a phone as a dedicated hotspot whose connection to the outside world can then be used in the way pictured below?

Whereabouts in the country?

If you have line of sight to an area with UFB, consider asking someone who has fibre (a mate, letter drop) to put wifi dish on their roof and get point to point wifi going from your house to theirs, pay for half the fibre cost (or all of it)  Cambium do some really good "wifi in a box" solutions at reasonable price.  I've setup many of their products.  Other vendors an option too obviously.

Is it even possible to use a USB-C to ethernet adapter in the method indicated? Pretty sure that won't work. Let alone all the other feedback re not using a phone as a modem.

Theoritically you could use an old laptop that has an LTE modem (eg Thinkpad) with opn/pfsense.

Or just a 4G modem. I don't think the network can/does actually differentiate. I'm pretty sure we used a 2Degrees SIM with a 90-day 12GB data pack or thereabouts as an emergency backup for something for a while, in a desktop 4G router. Worked fine and did not blow up.

Android will generally recognise and use most USB-to-Ethernet adapters, but I'm not sure whether hotspotting using one would have the desired effect. A WAP set up in WiFi Client or repeater mode might actually be a more reliable approach.

In either case, though, I imagine you'd get a week or two into the first billing cycle then get a fair use email.

The price at NL is always changing, but today its $329 (slightly cheaper than from Starlink direct if you include shipping).

The 4G speeds can be pretty variable.  Here's some speed test results from ComCom:

Interesting update...

A couple of weeks ago, I used the address checker on Starlink.com for our new home, bingo, Starlink is available, woo!

The following day I go into Noel Leeming, pick up a kit and take it home (17th August). I didn't activate the account straight away as I didn't want to pay for 2 weeks while we waited to go to our new property.

Move day tomorrow. I go online tonight (31st August) to activate our service address and order the service, get the following message on the site..."Starlink expects to expand service in your area in 2023."

2 weeks prior, the service is available, 2 weeks later, it's not.

What happened here?
