openmedia: Do you have the single battery or dual battery one? I tried the single, but the plastic cutting blades are useless.

The 36V line-trimmer model, I believe the single-battery one is the plastic-blade one that Gymjunnky was so enthusiastic about in the link I posted previously.  Haven't had any problems with it in about three years of use, and I'm only just getting to the end of the first spool it came with.

One thing with line trimmers is if you're using them as excavators, e.g. to dig into the dirt along the side of a path to get the weeds there, or even running it down the edge of a concrete mowing strip, you're going to go through a lot of line very quickly.  The likely reason why I'm still on the original line is that I use the trimmer shield as a guide to where the line stops, so 99% of the time only hitting grass or weeds with it, not dirt or concrete.

I have a 3 acre lifestyle block and for the last 20 years have gone through many trimmers and experimented with different heads and line.

The most successful for the last 4 years has been with a Masport Battery one from Mitre10 (I'm on the second battery now) with a simple aluminium head (as per attached picture) and Diatop Marine Blue (3mmx30m) twist line. Both are available on Trademe. The trimmer line is extremely robust and copes with trimmming around rocks and metal fence posts. I'm only halfway through the 30m pack some 18 months after purchase.

Earbanean:

One thing to maybe look at, if edges are a big part of what you're looking for, is a dedicated edge trimmer tool, rather than using a line trimmer for the job.  For us, it's never been worth getting a dedicated tool for edges alone  However, when our Stihl petrol line trimmer is eventually replaced, we might look at an Ego multi tool with a line trimmer head.  Then a separate edge trimmer head for it would be only $279, which would be worthwhile.  I haven't looked at reviews/opinions of the multi-tool yet though.

I have a petrol Shindaiwa multi head tool and have line trimmer and edger attachments. The edger being very similar to the EGO one linked above. This is so much better than trying to use the line trimmer to edge the concrete pathways etc.

The line trimmer is bump feed and ridiculously simple to reload. There are a several other attachments which makes the multi head so useful.

I've have it about 12 years and very happy with it. If I were to replace it I'd buy a Milwaukee or Makita electric equivalent.

I've got the EGO multi tool with the edger attachment and it's awesome. Perfectly straight edges.

I also have an EGO line trimmer which is really good too and I'd recommend.

Have the multi tool too for hedge trimming the high hedges. It goes well but damn it is heavy on the arms! I need to get a couple of small batteries.

Is it the weight or are you having to raise your arms too high? If you only have the short hedge trimmer is there a shaft extension you could add?

I had a go with something similar to that EGO Edger and it attacked the lawn and smashed into the pavers I was edging around.

Looking for something like the weed whacker style so its a bit more flexible with the edging and get into the tricky corners

I'm using the extension with the hedge trimmer on the end of that. I try to keep the weight on the sling but when reaching up to get the very top it is all arms.

Then, you weren't using it correctly.

My edger is almost exactly like the EGO one linked earlier in this thread. I can get into any corner and edge around pavers without attacking the lawn or smashing into pavers. It will do a far better job of getting into tricky corners than any weed whacker type of device.

I've not had to use a trimmer since employing a lawn guy.

But before that I found the above pretty useful.
