After having a bad experience with Vodafone, I'm thinking of moving my granddad over to Flip.  It seems to be the best deal by far with 20GB ADSL + Landline for $55 (not sure if there's a term on that, if someone could enlighten me that'd be great).

Just wanted to know what your experiences with them have been like?

Flip doesn't have a term contract. I don't know how you could miss that fact, it's plastered all over their site.
Assuming your grandad doesn't use much data, then it's definitely the best deal on the market for low users, and flip tend to perform pretty well in true at tests, for what they are worth.
Just a couple of things to bear in mind:

1) it's byo modem. His Vodafone modem should work, but might require you to change some settings.
2) you can only call the call centre for technical support, not for any other queries. (E.g. Billing issues)

i switched my parents over [late 70's] nearly a year ago and they have had no problems. They are on the same plan and only use 3GB a month and are so glad they switched. They have never called me about any problems and every time i ask them, they are happy with the company and service they provide

Common sense is not as common as you think.

all good here, had them for year and a half I've got a few people signed up with the $55 plan no complaints and it's hardly ever been down They gifted 300GB data to use within 12months for free last Sept and I didn't notice their $55 10GB plan has gone up to 20GB a month so all and all very happy with Flip so far so good

When it's working, Flip offers a good service at a very competitive price.

However, if you encounter problems, my experience has been that technical support don't have either the ability/desire to assist.

They have a standard script which, while helpful for many situations, they don't wish to deviate from even when it is obvious that problems do not lie at the home end of the connection. Presumably they hope that most complainants will give up and admit defeat.

Whatever the reported problems, they will invariably suggest
1) switch the ADSL modem on and off
then
2) replace the ADSL modem with another
then
3) a chargeable engineer visit

Rather than fix their kit they endlessly repeat this mantra even when we told them:
"For the last few weeks we have been experiencing terrible, intermittent, latency & no connectivity issues.

For Latency, the issues appear to affect primarily international websites, with NZ websites often loading immediately.

For No Connectivity, occasionally changing DNS servers on Internet Options has fixed the issue.

However, almost consistently diagnostics show your Server 100.64.7.1 as having 100% packet loss, and this server as being the start of the connectivity issues.

See the attached ScreenShot of example Ping Plot.

This down-time is currently happening every day at frequent intervals of 2-3 hours. Makes it impossible to complete any work. And, before you repeat yourselves, we have changed/switched on and off modems!"

I have moved from Vodafone for same reason to Flip and I really like it, better speed and I get much more for less price including 60 min international call per month that is carried over, service from Vodafone is crap and billing errors too. Glad I moved and never going to return.

(VDSL) Will be available by the end of the month.

Unlimited VDSL at $95 with a homeline is great news and I've already expressed my interest to upgrade by email (with no response. I'm hoping it may resolve the intermittent but daily complete loss of service I describe in my earlier posting ...)

Will it be immediately available in all the districts where Chorus currently provide it?
- or only in Auckland?

Great. Re no response, we're going to come back shortly with some firm dates.

Will be available all the areas were Chorus currently provides it. i.e. if Slingshot can provide it, so can we.

I haven't had a response to my VDSL enquiry either. I'm just outside the coverage area but the Chorus guy said as the lines are new and not many users (rural) I could quite possibly get reasonable VDSL so am hoping we can try.

Cool. Good pricing. Assume it will work the same as other plans I.e. No contract, BYO modem, p2p shaping at peak times etc?

A question I'm sure people on his forum are dying to know the answer to:

Will you be including a master filter for free?

If not, prepare yourself to receive the wrath of chief master filter enforcer sbiddle! :P

I'm keen on VDSL or possibly UFB.

Will need to upgrade Modem/router for VDSL, anyone use D-Link AC750? (I can buy locally $199 at Noel Leeming).

Other recommendations?
