Sky announced on their facebook page that they have been outbid for the EPL broadcast right by a private equity company, but have no other details at the moment.

They have speculated that it will be packaged as an online-only offering.

Changes the sky value proposistion a lot for me.
Interesting to see what happens - all I can hope is that Sommet have picked it up :)

I don't care who has the rights. So long as it's viewable and in HD

Interesting that a Canadian company has outbid Sky for the rights to the NZ market.  The way of the future?

I find this a little ironic. If Sky had won the bid, there would be the usual anti Sky, monopoly comments. True??

I'd say the winning bidder will stream it for a fee? Maybe pop it to Quickflix as PPV? This is the interesting part as clearly the bidder will sell it in NZ, how is of interest.

But if Sky was outbid, the cost for Sky to screen it will be the winning bid plus margin, so can't really see that.

Yeh can see that happening. but im also questioning the rights for other sports now such as NFL, NHL, NRL and maybe even Golf and tennis.

Will be interesting to see what happens. wonder if Telecom could get some type of partnership with them ;)

Hope they unbundle ESPN now as that was swallowed up by SkySports when they got Champions league

As a person who doesn't have sky but would love to watch the EPL this is great news. I would be the first to sign up for a online streaming of the EPL :)

Maybe the cost was not that high? For Sky, they effectively pay the bid and get no return as its added to an existing channel, Sport. The only revenue gain are those subscribers that add sport, or new subscribers that get Sky for EPL. Whereas a pay channel such as his Canadian bidder, can stream and PPV for what it will hope is a low enough price that makes existing PPV users (Sky, Quickflix, Netflix, Hulu, etc) add it to their pay options.

It used to be a separate channel that didn't require subscription to SkySports but that soon changed when ESPN got the CL, this is karma
