So your average viewer of 1 game a week is going to spend that money? I don't think so.

If you're just viewing one game a week, you're probably not going to go for the platinum package for $240. but for 38 games @ $150 = ~$4/game. which is quite reasonable imo. So I think they'd go for that. plus then you also get to watch some other games if you want, which brings the price per game down for any extra games you watch.

But its not on the telly, as the winning bidder mentioned on TV tonight. You can watch on a PC. Mac, iPad, Android Tablet.

They MAY look not bad, but blow it to a 50" TV, that's the issue. For me anyway

You may be right. But maybe we should wait until it launches and judge the quality then? It's using the same technology as is used for NFL game pass, and the couple of games I've seen on that through a tv have been good.

but il'l only watch games that Liverpool are playing,i dont care about any other team so that is only 1 game a week, so its not worth it for me. i will be happy with the hour highlights each week on TVNZ

Why would you want to watch that lot? haha.

In people like your case I think they could be missing a potential market. I reckon they could let you subscribe to just one team's games and also the weekly highlights show for like $80.

Krishant007: i am the one who cried the loudest when i heard this. for the past 7 years, i have not got sky cz it was too expensive for me (i was a student). I used to go to the pubs and friends places to watch the games. I am an avid football fan and used to watch the games at 2am.

This year, i finally make enough money and just last week, i signed up for the sky package (sky basic + 2 free premium channels for 1 year). Naturally I took sports and took movies as another.

But i just got this news last night... it hurts soo much! i just got sky installed literally not even a week ago, and i hear that there are not going to be EPL games being shown. I called up sky right away this morning and asked for an update and if i can just cancel my subs. they said no, you are on a contract..

this hurts real bad :(

If you can find any evidence at all that Sky was marketing EPL in the period before your purchase then I think you have a case that there was misrepresentation. They can't claim that they didn't know they could lose the rights as they have openly stated they had been negotiating for months

Akamai is a content distribution network, it's up to the provider to determine what format its in

I think the La Liga will be harder to attain as the clubs sell their own tv rights (like paul brislen said he thought would happen in the future)

They tried for this by the sounds of it, but broadcasting rules forbid single-team subscriptions as an option. According to the article on NBR at least.

hadn't seen that, so just read it. it's a shame they can't do that. I think the FA will probably be re-looked at in the future, as the online streaming grows.

I think this is the catalyst. I can see Sky improving iSky, if so, that's a biggie. Perhaps some individual content options. Competition is a good thing. Sky will have to move, as there will be other upstarts along the way too I feel

At $150 / year I'd subscribe if I can view the games add free on demand. Just annoyed as now I have to get a PC to play it on my older TV.

If Samsung had an app like they have for tvnz on demand / huluplus etc then I'd consider using the opportunity to upgrade to a smart TV, otherwise its not very consumable ...

I makes me laugh, we have moved from a monopoly supplier of multiple sport content to a single sport content monopoly and no-one sees the problem with this. I love the Saints but I will not be paying for this as I am now used to watching on a 55" TV and going back to a 19" monitor seems a backward step.

P.S. i have read a lot of posts but maybe not all.

The thing about having Sky having most of the sports rights meant that, for all of it's foibles and limitations, for most people it was straightforward and easy. Subscribe to Sky, subscribe to sports package, and the installer connects it all to the telly for you. Job done.

While I welcome competition, it has the potential to turn into a bit of a nightmare. Personally, I don't want to have to juggle multiple set top boxes, sets of connections, and multiple subscriptions. Also if things fragment greatly, I suspect that signing up to 3-4 platforms will quickly cost much more than Sky does now - $250 for the EPL, then $250 for the rugby platform, then more for the tennis, etc etc.

I can cope with the complexity, and will if I have to. Plus, the only sport I really care about is rugby.

However, as I suspect is the case for many GZers, I am also the default technical support guy for the family. I have elderly relatives who still can't cope with switching TV inputs from the DVD player to the satellite box and back again. I have to (literally) write down instructions including pictures of which buttons to press etc in a notebook for them. Then I still have to provide phone support when they forget how, get confused, or press a button on the TV remote that does something random and they can't get the news back, or get a rain fade message or whatever.

I *dread* getting into a position where for them to see what they want I will have to explain all this to them, cable and connect multiple decoders to their telly, buy them a computer or other device for streaming, and set up broadband and streaming etc as well. It would quickly become a nightmare for them and for me. We tend to forget that what is easy and straightforward for us isn't for some folks. I have only just finishing ensuring that one of them will even have a working telly after the digital switch over, and they are still confused about why they had to change things around.

Luckily, none of them are interested in the EPL. Had this been rugby or tennis I would already be having to figure out solutions for two other households. Actually, it's more likely I would be hiding under my bed with the lights out and not answering the phone............
