I think they're making it up as they go along ...

Anyway, I do wish Sky would update their listings so I could make a final call.  A delayed Arsenal game this Sunday ~ 1pm I could handle.  Sunday night will be a stretch, it will have to be a marathon of doing all "those" jobs around the house to stay away from media ...

And I wish they had used some foresight and had the Xbox/PS3 apps ready to go.  My 5 yr old TV only has 2 HDMI inputs, which are both being used by aforementioned PS3 and MySky of course ... I don't have a spare one for an HDMI cable from my laptop ...

It's still a much better offering of on demand versatility than Sky gave.

Walt12 - I'm in the same boat, if Summet have the Liverpool games say 12 hours after they are played, may pass on PLP, any longer than that and may shell out for it.

Thin I may wait till this Sunday afternoon to make the decision!

I've been playing with my network setup and don't wish to leave anything to chance so went about laying a Cat5 cable from my router to the Apple TV to remove any issues that might arise from wireless. At the moment I have 30M laid across the floor from the office into the living room. I must say I have noticed a marked improvement when watching HD feeds on YouTube which now play flawlessly as compared to playing the same feed over wireless. I do have a fairly good wireless network but nothing quite competes with hard wire. So the next few evenings will be plotting a route to hide the cable along ducts, drilling holes and under carpet.

All this has to be done when the missus goes to bed of course.

As I said a couple of pages back. The games on sky on Sunday (looking likely to be arsenal and Manchester United), I don't think they'll be on before 6pm. There is a 2 hour gap at 3pm where they could put one game. Cause sky have live itm cup, nrl, basketball and ufc on Sunday arvo.

And with Liverpool looking likely to be on sommet their game is on their schedule at 9:30 Sunday night.

Just watched the sample feed of the first 10 minutes of the Man City v Sunderland game and the quality is much improved over what I remember watching only a few days back. Maybe a week actually thinking about things. The ball no longer disappears on the fast pans which used to leave you playing a spot the ball competition in the early feeds; and I can clearly see blades of grass on still frames of closes ups of the pitch next to the beach that was laid to cover up the bare patches. I'm guessing there's been more attention paid to the quality issue which can only be a good thing.

You could use something like this which would give you more options.

Well I took the plunge and subscribed to the Platinum package. At the moment they only the 2 Asia Trophy games, a Goal of the Season show and a Season Review.

No issues with buffering so far at 9pm at night watching one of the games on demand. Snap VDSL connection. Guess the big test will come this weekend when the season starts.

A wee bit off topic but if you've got an iPhone you should grab this app.
https://itunes.apple.com/nz/app/fourfourtwo-soccer-stats-zone/id453744566?mt=8
Has stats from all games across 7 leagues/competitions. And it updates during the match, and can get push notifications with the starting eleven and scoring updates (obviously no good for those sticking with sky ) totally free this year by the looks of it, previously you had to buy each league. Oh it also has an archive of matches going back to 2010/11.

Too true. I've tested great HD YouTube feeds that are recorded and got the home environment perfectly set up. Have re-tested the PLP feeds with my new set up and all looks good. But none of this is live. What's it gonna be like at 1:00am Sunday morning when 10,000 ex-pats all try to stream their live games at the same time - that's the acid test.

Can bet there will be a full and frank divulgence of experiences on this thread through Sunday and beyond.

Good little app for sure when you're on the move. ESPN soccernet is still tops for me if you're at your desk with a full screen browser.

NonprayingMantis:
gjen: He also said it's locally Cached ?? which is not true

It is, it will be cached at Akamai in NZ.

Obviously the original stream comes from the UK, but they only need to pull down 1 stream and then locally people will stream from akamai which will provide a good experience.
this means you don't get 10,000 people all trying to stream the same thing from an international destination, which would be a rubbish experience.

There does seem to be a concurrent backup service on the demo stream which comes from the US when required but the vast bulk of traffic should be local.  It will be fascinating to see the range of experiences across the country from their local (or not so local) server.

A minor correction about the stream from overseas where I also suggested only one per game but in fact it is one per resolution per game so probably have a 3000, 1600, 1200 and 800 (and for those desperate perhaps 400).  This total per game of about 7 Mbps is still trivial loading on the international circuit and I would expect any quality issues to be local.  NeuLion (the provider) make a point about delivering quality and having visibility of the stream performance and with paying subscribers the way queries are handled and resolved will help define the success of the service.  This is a milestone for TV in NZ as the sole (legal) delivery option and I'm looking forward to feedback.

I'm so excited with this part of the season. The apprehension as to weather your team will progress or not is something in my blood which has never lessoned over the years. I reflect back to the radio days before TV when I followed my team, through black and white coverage of match of the day and then colour in the late 60s. I remember the furore when Sky first started in the early 90s and the uproar at the time; and then the advent to HD a few years back.

Streaming is surely the dawning of a new age. I'll now be able to watch my team on the move at best as close to live as can be. No doubt in a few years we will look back at a time when broadcasters held our pockets at arms and gave what they could afford. The future is bright for sports fans.
