trig42: How hard is it to install XBMC on it?

Its fairly easy.. you have to push the apk files to the box as there is no other way to sideload apps. I used the android method and had it all done in less than 5mins, also installed firefox with flash, sopcast and a couple of apps while i was there.

This guide here is the one i followed to push it from my phone.. A picture says a thousand words and all that.

How much did it cost to get an Amazon fire to NZ?

I'm looking for the total cost, exchange rate, postage, any fees in setting up youpost etc

I'm looking at getting one and trying to work out if grabbing this from Trademe is going to be easier than getting amazon to ship it via a shipping rerouter service

Cheers

I have had my FireTv for a few days now. I have had no luck with Netflix or Amazon Prime using unBlockus DNS settings in my Orcon and Telecom routers (2 houses). There is a message on Prime to say that the service is not available in my Geographic location. Netflix comes back with an error. I tried setting up static IP and UnBlockus DNS settings when connected to FireTv via Ethernet and I could not get an Internet connection. I note that UnBlockus are saying that they are working on a solution. Interestingly I could get a few series from Prime that I had previously watched to work. My Amazon account settings are using US address and CC. The device is really cool. The voice search works thru IMDB and seems to be very good. I an sure that there will be a solution soon (for me.)

OK, a small error in the Network settings when connected via the ethernet cable. All fixed now and entered UnBlockus DNS settings into the FireTv. Voila Netflix now works. I did have to enter a credit card for billing after the 1 month free trial as there was nowhere to enter my user name etc. Once that was in it seemed to recognise me. Will wait and see if I get billed twice!  Yet to try Prime etc.

OK, so far all Apps have tested OK. Seems this is a workable device here in NZ.

I have experienced that a couple of apps come up as unavailable. Amongst them Youtube and Frequency. Anyone else experienced that? I have gotten other apps installed without problems.

Youtube works fine here but because its a US box you have to be connected to unblock.us at all times, as it won't allow nz youtube.

Root needs to be come public, i want to install hola unblocker but can't as its locked down.

update to my experience.  xbmc crashes when going to watch movie or play music.   SPMC works well but terrible picture.  Installed plex on my server and client on FireTV and it works really well. Excellent picture.  Tried to get hola but no go. No youtube.
BUT have another problem not with firetv but will need to get another tv with more hdmi inputs or a hdmi switcher as at present have to keep changing cables.

But this used in conjunction with a freeview recorder could do away with need for htpc.  Of course still need laptop at least to rip dvd or blu ray etc

I like the remote but it is a mission getting the cover off to put batteries in.

They are constantly improving xbmc for the firetv, 2 new builds in the last day,  it really is a work in progress.
Ive played a number of movies and havn't had crashes as well as some flac/dts audio tracks. Only crashes ive had are down to the skin or some slightly dodgy addons such as 1channel and projectfreetv. Also try one of the latest gotham builds in that thread, its running alot better than spmc, you have to disable mediacodec in advanced settings and enable libstagefright if you havn't already. I would head over to the xbmc forum if your having more issues after that as its working fine for the majority of people, im happy as with it in its current state & if they manage to implement hd-audio, well.....

As explained youtube works you just have to have an unblock.us account.

The remote does the basics well (voice search is abysmial, it just can't understand me and apparently my fake american accent isn't upto scratch either lol, trying to watch mad men was painful, text search to the rescue! :D ).
Im using my logitech wireless keyboard and mouse for most things. Have been meaning to get a melef10 pro remote/keyboard.

Installed this morning, wired ethernet, unblock-us... Amazon Instant Video, Hulu+ and Netflix all working... That's all I needed :)

Is there any way of playing content from SMB shares or need to install a XBMC server?

It would cost about NZD 145 to land one here. - $99US = about $122NZ, Youshop will be their minimum charge, which is about $22 I think. They are running a 15% off special at youshop (use code THANKYOU15), so maybe land it for less than $140. Will take about 2 weeks.

I will have to try Hulu over the long weekend.

Yes you will have to install xbmc or something along those lines to access smb/nfs shares. Xbmc is just a client, there is no server like plex.
