marlinz: A question to the people that have the Amazon Fire TV

I am using a WD TV Live at the moment which has the DNS changed via Getflix

anybody using the Amazon Fire TV this way without having the DNS changed at your modem

Yes. I have unblock.us DNS configured on the unit, not on the router.

Brilliant stuff: install Flixster app, access to all my UltraViolet movies :)

Shame the USB port is non-functional to play local photos or other content.

Good stuff, I'll grab that app. My Fire TV arrived yesterday.
Device is similar in weight to apple tv but flatter and bigger.
Easy to set up with a nice little cartoon tutorial showing the user all the features.
I connected to a vpn connection for the initial setup but I understand a DNS router/or the settings works fine. After using theVPN went back to a using Overplay (DNS service)
Updated software took about 10 minutes.
Got Netflix, Prime and Hulu + up and running no probs. Picture quality seems good although my testing time  was limited (wife wanted to go out to dinner). Still have a feeling the quality is slightly better on Apple TV.
Voice search worked quite well.  Tested it 3 times
Purchased an Amazon game controller which will be shipped on 8th May. Of note when I purchased the game controller they gave me a free game, Sev Zero and $10 worth of amazon coins.
These were assessable on the fire TV as soon as I made the purchase.

Overall 8/10 but this grade is with a short period of testing time. Roku remote is more responsive.

I am having trouble configuring the Fire TV with Unblockus and it won't play netflix.

Can someone who has got this working tell me what DNS settings and other settings you are using successfully please?

I have my settings in the Router (use Overplay). I believe if you dont then you will need to set up on the actual device. Might have to do a factory reset and reconnect to your router manually.

Here is post on how to.

No need for a full reset. You can set network settings through the manual setup.

If you are using Wifi, the way to do it is:

Join network, click advanced and enter exact SSID, IP, gateway, network prefix (which threw me for a loop, used to netmask). The default network prefix they show is 24 which corresponds to netmask 255.255.255.0, and THEN you get to enter DNS :)

DNS for Unblock-us (given you have a subscription) is:
DNS1: 111.118.175.56
DNS2: 118.127.33.48

garvani: Quite a few xbmc members have pulled the trigger on the fire's. Will know tomorrow how "open" the device is to such things, heres hoping sideloading is the same as the HDX tablets. Nothing of note on XDA yet.

I was thinking if I needed to sideload any application, so decided to visit the guide linked from this reply... Nowhere in that guide the word "security" is mentioned. For all I know that first few links in the search results for an app could be a download from a third party website, packaged with malware (either profile information stealing which is useful on a smartphone/tablet, or a cryptocurrency mining software).

Installed Plex last night and it worked pretty well. I have a question about it but will post in another thread since it's not really an Android FireTV thing.

Noticed that some old home videos (extracted from a Sony Handycam) won't play on Plex even though they play fine on Windows Media Centre. Latest new ones, originally recorded as MP4 on Flip Video or Smartphones play just fne. Might have to convert the old ones since we don't want to lose those memories (although still play on the likes of VLC on Windows/Mac anyway).

I have a collection of DVDs as TS/VOB files and that doesn't play on Plex either. Trying MakeMKV now to create single files to use that.

if this works then the only thing left for the HTPC is really live TV, which can be easily replaced with a Freeview TV (we use an old LCD TV and for tuner a HDHomeRun).

Based on the feedback here and on the xbmc forms I bit the bullet last night.

The hope is to replace sky with Netflix and once xbmc is stable I can continue to consume local media from the nas (and get rid of the jail broken atv2 apparently worth a few $)

“We’re excited and energized by the momentum we’re seeing with Fire TV,” said Dave Limp, Vice President, Amazon Devices. “Customers are telling us they love it, developers are building for it, and we’re working hard to expand existing features and build new ones. We’re thrilled to have Hulu Plus, Crackle, and SHOWTIME integrating their full selection of movies and TV shows into Fire TV’s unified voice search.”

New features are also already in the works for Fire TV, including:

  • New Prime browse will make it even easier to discover movies and TV shows that are included in Prime Instant Video.
  • Amazon FreeTime and Amazon MP3 integration coming as part of a free, over-the-air software update.
  • More Games coming soon. In addition to the over one hundred games available on Fire TV, you will be able to play touch-enabled games with the upcoming Fire TV app for your phone or tablet.

I bought one and had clicked the link. I do log in with an affiliate login so perhaps that negates your affiliateness?
