Handle9: http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-setup-plex-and-xbmc-for-surround-sound-audio/

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately the material suggested nothing more than I'd already tried... Though one comment at the bottom seems to reflect the issue I'm having; he indicates he got it working though:

"Correction: got it to work by going into the individual video’s playback audio settings and disabling then re-enabling direct."

Whereabouts would this 'direct' setting be for the individual playback? I've looked at the audio options available when paying a video within XBMC but can't find anything like this.

Thanks.

HELP ? Since the update of 22 Sept 2014, my Amazon Fire TV device no longer runs Netflix. I have checked and double checked all of the setting, but it just won't run, referring me to the www.Netflix/tv/help site, which is of zero value. I have reset everything and started again, many times over, but it is just not happening.

Any pointers would be very much appreciated?

Thanks for the reply. My unit isn't routed. Netflix works just fine on my PCs.

I am using smartdns and the Fire TV OS version is 51.1.3.0_user_513011820.

I have checked the Amazon website settings and they all look just fine. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Netflix app several times. I suspect I am missing something really obvious :o

When I click on More Details, the connection failure screen shows a Netflix app 'ui-502' error.

How is your network configured? Do you have just one router or more? Are TCP settings in the Amazon box or router?

Have you changed this lately?

No nothing has changed at all, though as part of my diagnosis, I have updated the Amazon Fire specific smartdns settings. I run the dns on the box and PCs, rather than on the router. I hav tested running on the router, but the problem seems to be specific to the Fire TV device only. As I said, the PCs seem to connect to Netflix just fine.

There is a post here http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?topicid=146618&page_no=50 that seems to be the same error code.
Looks like perhaps an issue if various Netflix locations have been accessed.
Maybe have a read through the thread - though most of the thread was from some changes that Netflix made that some ISPs didnt implement properly.

Thank you very much for this. The link has explained my problem very well indeed. I have also spent quite some time with Netflix support who did not ever ask of my location. They were very helpful and have translated the problem for me into a language I can understand. Their solution they were sure would clear the bottleneck type problem was to power down my router and switch gear for 10 minutes - yeah right.

My suspicion is that I should be able to visit a neighbour 5Km away with a x10 faster download speed and this may clear the problem. My 2Mb/s is just not quite cutting the mustard. If I manage to run it once, that might well be sufficient to get me sorted. Like I said, this problem us on my AFTV unit only.

Thanks again.

Yes indeed. I don't think there is a hardware problem at all. It's just the problem with the initial thrust to getting through the IPL. It tries real hard, but fails. The PC has less to load and hence doesn't crash out. After all the reading I have done, spoken with Netflix, and smartdns, the problem is just my very slow and a bit too slow for AFTV. I'm going to try it late tonight when the internet is less busy and see how I get on.

My fire tv arrived today, and has rootable firmware on it.

Should I root it?

Anybody rooted there's? and why?

I plan to use it roughly 50/50 for netflix and kodi (xbmc). I have a Qnap NAS  on the network so while it would be nice to have USB access I can access media from the NAS instead if I cant.

You would only need to root it to get the USB access working as far as I know.
Otherwise noting you have mentioned requires root.

I have rooted mine so XBMC is the boot interface. I can get to the apps from XBMC so it generally makes for a consistent UI.

Are you saying you can launch the Amazon apps from inside XBMC? I would be very keen on that.

Cheers
Matt.
