freitasm: The fix was actually done by ISPs after UnoTelly and others identified the problem. They might have done something to make it easier.

Have a try on UnoTelly trial to see if it works for you.

There's nothing unlawful on accessing content from other regions.

Will give Unotelly a go.

Yes indeed, there is no law against accessing content from other regions, provided their licence agreement to view does not prohibit it.

You may want to give dns4me.net a try. They are in free beta at the moment.

Also just wanted to mention I paired an Ouya controller with my fire tv today and it's working great. Might be obvious, but it didn't occur to me before. Some of the games on fire tv are quite good.

Smart DNS came up with a solution, which I thought I would share, as it may affect many Fire TV users.

The ui-502 error turned out to be related to where Netflix started limiting accessing to the same account from different IPs/Devices. To address this there is a section on the Netflix account. You need to login from a web browser, where you can choose to disconnect every device connected to your Netflix account.

The fix was to logon to Netflix from a browser interface and then manage the profile. By selecting 'Disconnect all users', this seems to clear the issue and all is sweet again.

This should also fix the Apple TV issue too.

Handle9: I have rooted mine so XBMC is the boot interface. I can get to the apps from XBMC so it generally makes for a consistent UI.

Can you please link to the specific instructions you used to root your device? I'm after fool-proof instructions, clearly needed after I managed to stuff up the rooting of my own Fire TV, but I'd still like to succeed if I bought more on behalf of my sisters.

I followed method one as listed here- http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-setup-a-new-fire-tv-without-blocking-root/

I see Amazon has dropped the price again on these to $84, and apparently they still have the rootable firmware. It'll be interesting to see, though, whether the new Nexus TV provides a good substitute, especially if it'll have the ability to load XBMC.

Handle9: http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-setup-plex-and-xbmc-for-surround-sound-audio/

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately the material suggested nothing more than I'd already tried... Though one comment at the bottom seems to reflect the issue I'm having; he indicates he got it working though:

"Correction: got it to work by going into the individual video’s playback audio settings and disabling then re-enabling direct."

Whereabouts would this 'direct' setting be for the individual playback? I've looked at the audio options available when paying a video within XBMC but can't find anything like this.

Thanks.

Re issues with discrete surround playback: I stuck an optical cable in, which has resulted in the decoding of some video in XBMC with discrete surround- namely those with Dolby Digital/AC3. However I get no discrete audio in files using MPEG AAC Audio (mp4a), which I assume is because the receiver lacks the decoder for this format. Is there any solution to this? Even if XBMC can decode this, can the Fire output it without 5.1 analogue outs?

Edit: I've read that normally XBMC will indeed convert on the fly from AAC to AC3, and clearly this works fine on our Mac Mini. Can anyone report whether I should also be expecting such a conversion too be working on the Fire TV?

robjg63:
matt188: Just received my Fire TV yesterday. Ordered late in the evening on the 24th September, so pretty quick shipping from Amazon and YouShop.

Spent a bit of time last night setting it and have it going with Unotelly DNS and Netflix and Hulu Plus are working fine.  XBMC install was easy using adbFire.  Was able to set the time zone to NZ by installing "TimeZone Changer" apk.

A couple of issues I'm having:

1. Vevo just gives me a black screen after the intro animation and activating via vevo.com.  I can press to quit and get an ok/cancel prompt but that's all.  Is Vevo working for anyone else?  Its working fine on my Apple TV.

2. The audio lags on XBMC after watching for a while when I watch recorded TV (using the MediaPortal PVR client). Has anyone had any luck with PVR clients? I could switch to another recording backend if that gives a better result.

I use unotelly as well - Vevo works (or specifically doesnt work) as you describe.
Xbmc working perfect - but I am not using PVR files.
I installed llama and classic tv. You can use llama to make the classic tv icon launch xbmc - saves those multiple key clicks...

Happened to log into the unotelly control panel yesterday and saw some settings for vevo. Turned it on and vevo now works on the fire TV.

On another subject. I see the fire TV is now officially sold in the uk.
I would really like to have the BBC iPlayer working along side the currently installed apps.
I have seen that you can switch your region in amazon.com to (say) the UK. I presume you can then access the UK specific apps. Does this blow away the USA apps?

Anyone tried sideloading UK apps? If so where did you get them?

Would be interesting to get iplayer on it, as the firetv is the only media player I have that can be swiched to a 50Hz output so could replace the horrid smart tv app that I use at the moment for iplayer and 4OD

Iplayer works well, sideloaded pretty easily. I think I just googled around and found it.

Handle9: http://www.apk4fun.com/apps/bbc.iplayer.android/

Thanks Handle9.

I had the idea that as the Fire TV has just gone live in the UK and there is BBC support (I think they have to by law), there would have been a very recent apk file for iplayer specifically for the FTV.

I was sure I had once find a 'library' of apk files that were supposed to be all tested on the Fire TV - but cant find it now.

I put all the UK apps on via this method and they all work well. It also keeps your current US apps.

Yep - that works! Just what I needed.

I think I did find this in the last couple of days - but your comments about keeping the current apps reassured me.

Now have BBC iplayer and c5 installed as well as the original apps.
If 4od and ITV publish apps I will now have a 'dumb' tv with access to some super smarts!
