Re Kodi on Fire stick - I reckon install the Exodus addon - and then see whether you need anything more....

Just wondering, using Emby to send video to a 1st gen FireTV box (not stick). Emby will direct play most stuff (up to 720p I think) but transcodes uncompressed bluray MKV rips. Would anyone happen to know if the 2nd gen FireTV does the same or will it direct play this high bit rate stuff as well. Can ask at Emby as well but thought I'd enquire of you chaps first.

It is good, but comes with so much guilt.

Not really to get advise, but to weep and lament a bit: my Amazon Fire Tv stopped working a few days ago. It's reporting "we cannot connect to our servers" and no menu except for the settings menu works. Now the factory reset menu is pin protected, and since the box cannot contact the servers it can't validate the pin either, so I cannot even do factory reset.

Why technology behaves like this I have no idea, I have two Amazon Fire Tv boxes at home and the other one works flawlessly. I looked and packet trace for the one that is not working and I can see that it's heating "if I'm connected" page all right and getting response back. There is also some communication happening over TLS that I cannot see. In the settings the box is reporting that internet connection is up and running too, it's just that none of the menus works.

Customer support politely asking for an american phone number they can call me on to discuss. Since they are not officially selling these units outside of america they require US number (they automated system would not accept non-US number). So I basically left with an expensive brick. Oh, well.

If you use the online chat thing they offer to call your NZ phone number, I was having problems where wifi and bluetooth wouldn't work on the unit sporadically so couldn't use the unit or the remote, luckily my TV remote could be used to factory reset it (i didn't have a pin on it).  I nailed it down eventually to some apps i had loaded using App2Fire android app as since the last time it did it i have not reloaded those apps and have not had the problem again.  But had a couple of chats with Amazon support and they offered to call me even though i was in NZ, it is a slow process (the chat) and somewhat frustrating but eventually they get the picture and hand you off to someone with some tech knowledge.

The PIN is not stored in the box? - that's pretty annoying.

You have wifi and cable connection on the fire TV - if you normally use wifi have you tried it with an ethernet cable or vice versa?

There is a Fire TV remote app on android - just to take a wonky remote out of the equation have you tried using that as a controller?

All sounds pretty annoying - there are a few guides etc on this site: http://www.aftvnews.com/tag/guide/ maybe you could root the box and reflash it.

Actually this guide specifically might help you: http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-unbrick-by-entering-recovery-mode-and-factory-reset-the-amazon-fire-tv/

Sounds like you have a brick - you cant do it any more damage....

Sorry, not sure if that was for me or not ? If so, you're saying 2nd gen FireTV plays 1080p without trancoding ?

Hmm - doesnt come up when you query the google play store - but a general google query finds it:

Thanx for the link but even when using a US VPN it says that it can't be installed on any of my devices (country)
