No, it already shows on the Home screen under recent apps.  What I was trying to do is have Kodi automatically start whenever the Fire TV is rebooted.

Just got mine setup and must say it's way better than the Fire TV Stick that had a habit of buffering  on some apps like NBC On Demand.  Tested it on that app just now and no buffering or sync issues.

One thing.  Can some one please load the app CBS News and test it.  Since Sunday when the app needed to be updated on my TV Stick and now with this new Gen 1 unit  gives me an error "CBSN Live Stream is not available now" on both stick and box.  Have logged it with CBS Interactive ..

Thanx in advance..

I have a Fire TV 4K (2nd gen). Recently it has become apparent that subtitles aren't working on the Netflix app. I've looked at all the settings for subtitles (inc. online in my Netflix and Amazon accounts). I've directed it away from DNS4me servers, I've changed location and timezones to NZ, and then to the US, I've even deleted and reinstalled the Netflix app - all to no effect. Does anyone have any insight?

SOLVED. As part of trying to enable access to Netflix US, UK etc., I had set up static IP routes on my Fritzbox to block a range of DNS addresses (as detailed in some tutorial I found). It didn't work, and I gave up on getting overseas Netflix, but I forgot about this list of blocked addresses. Have now disabled these and voila, subtitles are working.

Lizard1977:

So I've been having fun playing with my new (second-hand) Fire TV, but one thing has eluded me.  I want to have Kodi start up when the Fire TV is rebooted.  Google searching indicated this was possible using ADBFire (now ADBLink), but the new software doesn't match the old guides.  I'm beginning to suspect that what I want to do isn't possible (anymore).  Can anyone confirm this to save me endlessly chasing something that doesn't exist? Or if it is possible, point me in the direction of the right instructions?

I recently went through the same process, having just purchased a second Fire TV. I've used the same program I installed on my first one, but it appears it now has less ability to control what goes on with the device. The app is called FireStarter - I think I needed to sideload the app via ADBLink or similar. It used to allow the ability to also launch a selected program by a double click of the home button (still there but doesn't seem to work), but it still does have the option for "Startup Application", which I have selected to Kodi - and this works fine still.

You've asked for links to a guide - I'm pretty sure I followed the link from this page: http://kodi.wiki/view/HOW-TO:Install_Kodi_on_Fire_TV#adbLink_.28Win.2FMac.2FLinux.29

Note: I selected to install Kodi using apps2fire (transfers installed apps on an Android phone to be installed on the Fire TV), but then I needed to use ADBLink to install FireStarter (I'm sure - it's been taken off the Amazon App Store - so I found a copy of the apk somewhere).

Hope this helps a bit...

The reality is the Fire TV is very much dominated by (surprisingly!) Amazon "product" - the 2nd gen version even more so than the first; given I bought this primarily as a Kodi device it's a bit frustrating, but the launch on boot function helps. Personally, I'd rather have the ability to simply have icons for selected apps visible on the home screen.

Given it also has most of the key apps we'd use (primarily BBC and Netflix) it almost is a single box solution for us - the main exception is the lack of native AirPlay support. Can anyone recommend a good app to add AirPlay support? Most apps get only so-so ratings, partly I understand because Amazon kills their access with new versions of the OS so they stop working in the end. I've tried some to mixed success, but am reluctant to keep on buying apps that don't do much! If I can work out how to AirPlay TVNZ then I can get rid of the Apple TV... Or is there an easy way of casting from the Android TVNZ app to the Amazon Fire?

Thanks Johnathan18.  I used the ES Explorer method on that page to install Kodi, and apart from a hiccup in typing in the URL (painstakingly, with the supplied remote), it worked fine.  As for FireStarter, I discovered it had changed to AppStarter and has lost the functionality to launch an app on boot.  I did try looking for the old FireStarter apk to sideload, but struck out.  Are you able to direct me to where you found the old apk?

This site is very useful for Amazon Fire TV Owners:

http://www.aftvnews.com/

Specifically in relation to the AirPlay question above:

Maybe that is what you are after....

Looks like CBSN have geoblocked their site.  The normal DNS I use Getflix  will not override it though it overrides everything else except Netflix.  Works via a  web browser though.

User interface is better.

picture quality is better than most web browser playback.

It doesnt do windows updates when you want to use it.

that makes sense the portability.

although i only really use netflix and youtube.

so this is an alternative to say Chromecast etc, for TVs that dont have apps needed etc.

I am away in Auckland! I want to see new shiny things!

Is this on the original Fire TV or new models only?
