Hi there,

Today I have just got  Vodafones Huawei HG 659 modem to enjoy Netflix through unblock-us. Was connecting well (but intermittent low quality images) on the old ADSL modem which I sucessfully set up last week.

I have gone to change the DNS server setting in the modems control panel but the settings don't seem to be saved when the modem is rebooted as suggested.

Netflix now showing as unavailable in my area. Damn.

Unblock-us say that there is a known issue with Vodafone NZ and needing a static IP address. I didn't seem to require one with the ADSL modem.

How difficult is it to get a static IP address over a holiday weekend?

I can only give you my experience
1) I am on Vodafone VDSL (approx 2 months).
2) I use Unotelly and use the 2 Australian IP Addresses loaded into the HG659 (rather than the NZ IP Address).
3) I believe, rightly or wrongly that the HG659 'looses' the loaded IP Addresses. I don't know (at present) why this happens.
4) I have no problems at present watching Netflix whether it be Netflix USA, Canada or Mexico. It depends on the movie that I want to watch.
5) The video quality is excellent.

Update DNS details on the specific device rather than in the router? Also gives the benefit of likely faster DNS results for other devices not using this service as they would normally be delayed.

Apple TV is not connecting to the internet at all now either by ethernet cable or wifi. When I try to manually change the DNS settingson Apple TV, the page disappears before I can start filling it in.

This seems to be the problem, that the DNS settings are really not saved, when I have clicked the "save" button

Configuring DNS settings on the modem/router is always a bad idea - it means the rest of your internet experience will suffer badly as a consequence on using incorrect DNS servers.

You should always set these on your device. If you don't have a device that supports changing the DNS you really need to look at appropriate hardware (such as a Mikrotik router) that'll allow you to hand out specific DNS servers in the DHCP requests to specific devices.

While I have no reason to believe VF are doing this, an ISP hardcoding DNS settings so they can't be changed by an end user would be a fantastic feature - it'd save so many support calls and end users disappointed by a poor end user experience and bad CDN speeds because they're using incorrect DNS.

You don't need a static IP on Vodafone. This is something that affected people behind the proxy (TelstraClear cable) accessing via HTTP. Most of the apps (Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Prime) use https or their own protocols bypassing the proxy.

what you need is to configure it on the device. Perhaps your Apple TV is not connecting because when you changed the router you got a new LAN address? Change the Apple TV to use DHCP assigned, restart, THEN change to the correct IP addresses.

Thanks for your replies. I have got unblock-us working on my desktop. It seems that apple TV is the problem. It does not want to connect to the internet via wifi. Ethernet works OK but I will need to get iNetflix on wifi until I can organise a hard wired solution.

I can't enter any settings manually. Because it keeps flicking between connected and disconnected, those screens always keep flicking away too."

Yep my experience too. Very frustrating.

It was working perfectly on my NetcommADSL N300 modem yesterday. 

Any suggestions are welcome.

Its an issue with all our Apple devices (Apple TV, iphone 4 and ipad2) seeing the LAN but not gaining access to the internet. The only devices that are connecting to the internet via wifi are our two desktops running Windows 7.
I have discussed this at length on the VF forum and seem to be getting nowhere at the moment.

Have you checked if the router/AP has 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi (I don't know the model)? If so, have you tried turning 5GHz off, and using 2.4GHz only?

Try setting to 20mhz, Channel 6, Disable 5ghz, and an alt SSID and WPA key, If it works start reversing the changes one at a time.

My guess is apple devices and their shoddy wifi support for features supported by everything else.
