jamesplay: So what's differs this from the US Chromecast? I've personally bought a few of these from Amazon about 3 months ago, and they've costed about $55 including shipping, but I've just sold those again.

Did the ones you bought on Amazon come with NZ power plugs?  The NZ version currently being sold in shops come with a NZ power plug.

The Amazon one I bought when they first came out came with a US plug pack..  I just use an adapter..

freitasm: Sure, but these were parallel imported, not official.

I don't see the difference.

There's no difference. My point is that OFFICIALLY Google introduce the Chromecast in New Zealand this week. That's all.

I bought one of the PB Tech ones when they started selling them. The original US charger was included in the pack - just needed an adaptor.

They also included a "New Zealand" USB mains charger. A hideous thing with two permanently on bright glowing red LED's that light up the whole room.

Couldn't even palm it off to the kids, so threw it in with my hoard of spare power supplies.

Picked mine up from Noel Leeming yesterday and took great delight watching live UK TV (from my Note 4 FilmON Live TV app) cast to the 40 incher in the office. Quality not the greatest but not much worse than SkyTV feeds.

Took it home and reset it for the home network. Took even more delight when I found out that the android Popcorn Time app is set up for Chromecast as well. High quality streaming of Game of Thrones - perfect! Was going to buy my son an Apple thingie (whatever you call it), but this will do the job just as well - if not better, by the looks of things.

Now, time to work on the router and get past this google dns problem.

Google Chromecast uses the Google DNS since it id hardcoded. Therefore you can't stream geoblocked content such as Netflix.

If you block requests to Google DNs it will automatically fallback to your network configuration and supposedly you will have a DNS such as UnoTelly to stream that content from the correct servers.

So using a Chrome extension like Hola is not going to work unless I fudge with my router?

Correct. Once you hand-off playback to the chromecast, the DNS it uses comes into play.

My Chromecasts are rooted, which allows me to enter custom DNS'.
I'd be interested to know what firmware is shipping with the NZ stock and whether any of them have rootable serial numbers.

Just noticed that Warehouse Stationery are selling parallel imports of Chromecast at $75 - they will take a beating at that price.
