I'm very impressed with the movie selection on HBO Now. Much newer than Netflix. Certainly makes the higher price point more palatable.

I take it HBO is geoblocked?

What's the cost?

It is, and some people who have signed up have had their accounts cancelled because HBO was onto them. Not sure how, but possibly it was people who used reshipping addresses which gave away that they weren't in the US. It's $14.99US per month.

Ya, likely they put some effort into not compromising their license agreements.  Their agreement likely doesn't entitle them to draw revenue from this area.  Likely the revenue that the rights holder gains from the likes of MediaWorks, TVNZ and other local content purchasers, is higher than the revenue they loose from policing and deleting accounts sold into this area.

It's also likely that our users are causing traffic flows over expensive parts of the internet (to them) in terms of peering, so periodically they do a clean up.  A simple trace and latency test is likely how they figure it out.

No.

Edit: Or at least it didn't at launch. My ISP has withdrawn Global Mode so I can't retest.

Not really. Netflix's focus isn't really on movies. It's more about TV, with a few movies thrown in for good measure, but not particularly new ones.

Correct. You want movies, the latest ones, then you have to use either Amazon Instant Video or Apple iTunes. And those are PPV or outright purchase.

Or (on Roku et al) Vudu, or M-Go, or Blockbuster ... etc, etc.

Yes but not that newer .  Much more content though..   Saturday nite is normally my watch a movie nite but looked on Netflix US and found nothing I wanted.   Found Halo Nightfall on iTunes instead..

For movies I flick between Canada and Great Britain, saw the release list for US at the start of the month and was very underwhelmed.

Use istreamguide app (free on Android, cost on iOS), gives you complete listings for all Netflix regions including all new releases for all regions

There seems to be a better selection of US movies available outside the US region, our account spends more time in UK/Norway/Canada then it does NZ or US
