Hello all.

My parents have ditched Sky. They are happy with Apple TV/Netflix as an alternative in general, but are missing a CNN type news service. RT and Al Jazeera are available on freeview, but they find these too politically slanted.

Is there a legal alternative? Something they can stream through Apple TV? ABC is available on Apple TV but my parents find it really focuses on lod=cal US news. They are looking for something like BBC, or CNN international.

Any thoughts?

You may wish to visit this site here. Although the article focuses on Apple TV, I find the streaming links work with my Sammy TV app - SmartIPTV, so you are not tied to Apple TV.

The links I have used from that site provides a continual stream of Sky News UK, BBC International News, BBC 24 (local news focus), ABC News (Australia), CNN Europe feed, Euronews and ABC News (US). So a good mixture and excellent sources for major world stories.

Hope this helps.

Aljazeera and Sky News (UK) have live HD streams on youtube.

No idea if apple TV has a youtube app or not but it would be a pretty stink device if it didn't.

A YouTube app that allows live streams, Apple TV has YouTube. Not tried using it for live. For a long time the Apple tvs were not updated (during the whole apple/Google pretty problem phase - the old google maps on iPhone where it was so far behind it wasn't funny).

But it should be able to do that now.

Here is an alternative plan: If your parents had Sky then they have a Sky dish. Most likely they can receive Intelsat 19 on it. You just need to experiment with placing the LNB. All  they need then is a cheap satellite STB and they can receive Euronews, France TV and even the South Korean news channel, all in English.
