I'm sure it must have something to do with the box or its configuration but I can't figure out what is making the difference. I am setting up a Windows version of Kodi to see what happens.

OK, I'm running Kodi on an old Windows 8 mini-pc. Most of the NZ links seem to work but some take a very long time to load. Others are quicker. Wairarapa, which has worked before, just froze with the endless spinning circle. I am now watching the hurricane channel. What I'm getting from this is that it seems fairly arbitrary. It is hard to know what to fix when you don't why something doesn't work.

Some links do take longer than others. I gather that with some 'channels' there is only one stream source, so it usually starts quickly. In other cases there are multiple sources with different quality streams. Before playback begins Kodi does a (relatively) quick check through the streams to work out which one to use. In those cases I would guess maybe 10 seconds before playback?

It varies hugely. 10 seconds is on the low side. 30 isn't unusual. The worst is when nothing at all happens. Sometimes it times out after a couple minutes. Other times it just locks the system and I have to power down to reset.

I will try to upload log files here tomorrow if I can get to it.

OK, here are my log files. I didn't want to pollute the thread so I put them on tinyupload:

I should point out that I have been experimenting with some different devices. On Windows Kodi, everything seems to work more or less as it is supposed to. I am able to stream any of the NZ links. On the Android devices, Parliament TV is the only NZ site that works. The others just time out or spin the circle forever. Most of the Aussie sites seem to work normally, though the 7 Sydney ones don't. This is the same on both my devices.

I tried comparing this with the Huisman streams earlier. Those seem to work better. I can usually get the NZ sites on them.

To avoid sending too much rubbish (I can't judge what is relevant), I reinstalled one of my devices, a TV dongle, to limit the log files to today's operations. I tried several streams to generate whatever error information there might be. Most were the NZ streams that don't work, plus a few others that do. The dongle is running Android 4.0.1 and I am using Kodi 14.2 on it, which is the most recent version it can handle. However I have identical problems streaming the same links on Android 6.0 running Kodi 17.4.

I hope this information is useful. I greatly appreciate any insights you can offer.

Still having Kodi issues I don't understand. If I stream NZ Freeview with IPTV simple client, it works fine. If I try almost anything else, especially anything overseas, I get constant buffering, freezing and audio drop-out. I have mainly been using BBC iPlayer to test with but I have similar issues with other streams. I am using wired, not wi-fi. My RBI connection speeds test out at around 20 mbps or better on DSL Reports. If I stream iPlayer or other overseas sources via an HTTP browser, they generally work fine. I only have problems when using Kodi. I have adjusted buffer and other settings to recommended optimum using Ares Wizard Tweaks but no improvement. I have also limited the iPlayer stream to 5.5 mbps but that doesn't help either. I have three different Kodi installations, including one on Windows 8, and they all behave the same. Can this have to do with the apps from the Kodi repository, or could it be related to the Kodi version 17 I am using? I don't understand it well enough to be able to properly diagnose it myself, but this is very frustrating. I have to wonder if Kodi is even worth the trouble. Can anyone shed insight on this?

Whilst not a direct help, I run Kodi on 3 devices - HTPC (AMD 6Core), Raspberry Pi B+ and my Galaxy S8+.  Whilst I had problems when originally setting things up and I kept switching between the two providers (Apsattv and Matt) it has been stable for weeks now.

I have the same version of Kodi and the same plugin (IPTV Simple Client).

I am on a UFB connection so my only help may be to points towards your RBI connection?  Or maybe your ISP? Who are you with?

You may be conencted via ethernet however is your RBI delivered to cell phone tower? there is probably lag and packet loss delay and inconsistant speeds involved

Yes the RBI comes from a cell phone mast. Why would this affect Kodi so much but not regular HTTP streaming? Does it have to do with the IPTV protocol? Is there anything that can be done? It is all a bit over my head but I would like to understand it better.

Edit: The speeds are certainly inconsistent. They go up and down like a yo-yo all the time, even when running speed tests, but the average is always around 15-20 mbps or better.
