kharris: If I turn on match frame rate and range on my Apple TV4K it switches from 50Hz to 60Hz. Is that bad?

Might depend on your TV panel, on mine there's noticeable jitter if I turn match frame rate on and Spark Sport switches to 60hz. At 1080p/50hz there's no jitter for me.

On my Shield TV with Matt H's Kodi addon, the frame rate switches to 50hz

No I don’t have access to F1. But as stated, for the rugby the TV switches from 50Hz to 60Hz. So the rugby must be at 60fps?

Maybe it doesn't do what I thought it would?  anyone with kodi installed and normal SS with RWC could test the switch?  If Kodi doesn't switch then there is a problem with the stream itself...

Interesting. That suggests that the frame rate for the rugby is 50fps then. My very limited knowledge is that the fps should be played at a multiple of the monitors refresh rate. Strange that the Apple TV thinks the frame rate is 60fps. Does that suggest an encoding issue or maybe a bug in the app?

the device is negotiating 60FPS. this can cause a bit of a jittery experience, Really depends on Panel/Digitizer though it seems.

I get it on one TV in the house here with a Chromecast Ultra, but not the other.. Both LG tv's.

Easy fix for Chromecast is to turn on 50hz mode.

@Monza - where did you get this image from? Do you have a link to it at all? Thanks!

There was a TCF conference call just before RWC, I didn't attend but a powerpoint slidepack was emailed around after.... I can't share the rest of it publicly sorry.

Well thank you very much for sharing that, it explained why the quality on my Sony Android TV (very new model) looked substandard! I'm now happily watching in the highest quality at 50fps using Matt's Kodi plug-in, much better!

Based on @Monza post the RWC on appleTV is @ 60FPS so of course the device is negotiating 60FPS and setting the refresh rate to 60Hz.  So why would this cause a jittery experience if it is in fact 60FPS... is this incorrect and the refresh rate should be 50Hz?

In case it helps

My ATV4 is set to 1080/50. Match Frame rate is OFF. I cannot tell why my old but awesome Panny plasma is doing as there is no setting.

RWC and F1 are great. I read here F1 is 60 and RWC is 50, but slightly El Confuso now!

Next time I'm free I can experiment with the ATV on 50 and 60 and the Match frame rate (to TV) is On and off and with RWC/F1

But it all seems to work out of the box here

RWC is 50fps and F1 is 60fps; so your tv is doing its own smoothing to deal with the mismtach in framerate to frequency... If there is a mismatch then there could be jitters like there is on my Samsung Plasma.

No, people have confirmed in the other thread that the RWC is 60fps.

RWC is 60 according to   https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=151&topicid=248913&page_no=73#2328871

That being the case, RWC and F1 are 60, ATV4 is 50 as per my default setting. Is the smoothing on my TV occuring all the time or ONLY if there is a mismatch

When smoothing is on, its good. The ball if panning and distant, can show multi images. Closer up its fine. If I turn smoothing off, that ball is better, but I feel the players are not as silky smooth. Its subtle, but I notice it. Its not jitter, its like micro jitter, but I can detect it. Possibly a placebo going on there too.

RWC cannot be at 60fps naturally in NZ as it is converted by TVNZ (as recieving broadcast partner) and converted to 25i for terrestrial distribution, unless this is only occuring for those being shown on terrestrial OTA TV and the rest are passed directly on to Spark Sports encoding partner in the US?

That makes the most sense. That "might" have summitt to do with the odd pauses we see in the local production ?

Yep could be why its only the content shown on TVNZ as well which appears to have issues?  I don't know, I haven't got the RWC pass so can only comment on what I have generally read... Either way, if the content is being parsed at 60 fps by Spark Sport but having been altered on the way through this will play havoc with different panels and systems.
