Do people in any European country pay a licence fee for FTA like in the UK?

There was that thing with the BBC IPlayer asking for a UK post code trying to restrict viewing to the UK a while ago wasn't there?

Apparently Disney sent out an email re geo blocking on Disney+.

They sent out an email today related to geoblocks: apparently anyone who used Paypal to pay, or who signed up using the app needs to provide additional information to be able to get access when they're in other EU countries. If you paid by credit card they check the country the card was issued in.

I'm guessing this is related to an EU law which went into effect last year or so, and which states (as I understand it) that you should be able to access any streaming content you paid for even if you're in another EU country than the one the account is registered in.

I can't say for sure, but I think most countries have abandoned the license fee.

Whilst it'd be nice to get an early look, outside of Captn Marvel and Avengers Endgame, pretty sure I've seen most of what was on that Dutch guys youtube clip, nothing I'll desperately miss between now and Nov 22.

Set this up last night with Dns4me.  Found nothing I wanted to watch.  The content is there, but you've seen it already.  Guess this will change with actual launch and new stuff.

I just did a quick Google to see if it is legal to stream BBC and ITV outside the UK and the answer was no so Zattoo/Filmon etc must be illegal where those channels are concerned.

Edit - and then I read somewhere else that Zattoo is doing it legally so I'm confused.

I was playing around to see if I could find a way to get the Dutch trial and I sideloaded a couple of apps that claimed to do just that. Hoorah, I now have an actual Android virus! Am presently scanning with Malwarebytes. Needless to say, the app didn't work. If you decide to go this route, be aware that you get what you pay for.

This link is old but it explains Zattoo's perspective. Apparently they are right since nothing has been done.

Yes I read that but then apparently Zattoo removed the UK channels in 2010 after pressure from the BBC and then reinstated them in later years.

Good to see the Gummi Bears on there. When I visited Disneyland/Disneyworld, the only reference go the Gummi Bears I could find was a few of them on a tiny poster with a large number of Disney characters. In late 2012 when I visited Chicago, the man at the Disney store hadn't heard of them and tried to tell me they weren't Disney characters.

after seeing that it has just reminded me how bad their live action films were in the 70's and early 80's, they just about sent Disney bankrupt

Are there still some issues around rights to the Marvel stuff? There are only a few of the Avengers movies. E.G Iron Man and Iron Man 3 but not 2. I would have thought they would want to have more of one of their premium brands at launch to generate interest.
