afe66: Id rather 100m went to health service than allowing rugby and cricket to be free.

(Of course it would only be manly sports we support, not womens sports or girl games like soccer which probably have equal numbers playing)

Why sponsor sport at all then?
The NZ tax payer is already paying for these teams, just not allowed to watch them as part of that.

I agree with that other guy, that NZ sport should be free to air. This can be a condition to the govt funding they receive.

"Hey we will fund X team from the taxpayer but in return we want to own the broadcasting rights"

JPNZ:

Looks like we will never get numbers from Spark (most likely as they are nothing to cheer about) but in todays earnings call where Spark over the last 6 months had an 11.4% drop in profit YoY, mentioned this about SS.

"Financials weren't broken out for Spark Sport. On a conference call, CFO Stefan Knight said Spark wanted the service to be commercially viable but that it was not there yet. Spending on Spark Sport was, "not disimilar to what we used to spend on Lightbox," Knight said. Hodson said Spark was open to partnerships."

Meaning "We might consider delivering matches via Sky Sport" ???

and what happened to Lightbox,. you need really deep pockets to get live sport content and then make a profit streaming it in a small market like NZ. There is a reason why every other live streaming sport service has crashed and burned in NZ.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Yes and overestimating the so called younger people who will actually pay cold hard cash for what NZ cricket and spark was going on about what the new target audience was.

Sports followers in NZ are multi sports followers who don't want to pay separate fees.

And NZ cricket thinking that people who watch test cricket want to stream it.

Seems quite a generalisation there.

Spark Sport isn't Spark Cricket. SS has a number of sports. Its low cost, not much cold hard cash.

Sports followers priority is to watch their sport. I see comments that Sky is a monopoly, and that Spark Sport affects rural dwellers, I don't read much about cost.

I watch NZ cricket, Formula 1 and other bits and pieces on Spark Sport. I count care less what the platform is, a 45 minute F3 race or a 6 hour test session, it doesn't matter. It works, quality is good, it doesn't matter if its via Terrestrial, satellite or broadband. Isnt that the whole point of the internet?

I think its fair to say that when it comes to non-core Telco products, Spark has a fairly good track record of killing or 'selling' them once they get bored.

Ferrit, Ojo, Music Store, Morepork, Lightbox... Spark Sport? Qurious?

Yes and no. I agree that we are multi sports followers who don't want to pay separate fees,  but as a subscriber to Sky Sport I can accept that Spark Sport were awarded the cricket rights and that I should pay Spark for the privilege of watching the cricket.

Success for any media company means maximising their paying audience. Delivery of a television product via internet does not get close to 100% coverage yet, my guess is we won't be at that point for another decade or so. If Spark Sport is serious about being a media company, not just an internet company, then they need to actively pursue partnerships to get their content out to those who are willing to pay but for whom delivery by internet is not economically viable.

I wouldn't mind paying little extra to add SS as another package to my Sky satellite connection.
Don't want another service as already paying for Netflix, Spotify, Sky.
Terrestrial/satellite is as live as it gets. I'm bothered by 30-40 sec stream delay.
These are factoring my personal decisions.
I can say we as a household watching a lot less local cricket this year.

One of my gripes with SparkSport is they have their highlights at a lower frame rate. I'm using an Apple TV 4th Gen, with the SparkSport app, and it makes the highlight packages almost unwatchable, jerky action, audio gets out of sync etc etc.

They confirmed this to me in an pop up chat yesterday, saying their live broadcasts are at a higher frame rate than highlights.

Don't know if others have noticed, but i find it bloody frustrating.

Kayo in AU did the same thing, then got plenty of stick from subscribers and changed, and their 'Kayo Mini's" are perfectly fine to watch now.

Major deficit, use of 30 fps, in my opinion. I cancelled.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.
