The news that Disney are to stop releasing physical media in Australia and New Zealand is a real kick in the guts for collectors. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be the last release here.

I know that some of us will be thinking that its no great loss, as Disney have been putting out less than pristine 4K discs lately. But it is a much larger loss than just Disney titles. Fox, Marvel, Pixar and Lucasfilm titles come under Disney's umbrella also. The live action film of The Little Mermaid and the new Indiana Jones movie won't be released on disc over here, unless Disney are willing to make a deal with any of the other distributors. But would it even be worthwhile for said distributors to take this on. Some are saying "this may be the beginning of the end for physical media" in Australasia. We will be able to source new titles from overseas retailers such as Amazon US or UK, but the cost of importing could be prohibitive. It seems like only a matter of time before all physical media will disappear from the online shelves.

So, what's our alternative?... streaming I'm afraid. Disney films are released as buy only titles on iTunes. Usually with Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos A/V. I buy both disc and digital films, and I would have to say that the difference between a video stream and a disc played on your trusty old Blu-ray Player has become much closer in quality. Its the Audio that lets down streaming titles. Don't get me wrong it still sounds great, but just lacks the dynamics of say, a Dolby Atmos encoded disc. At the moment the Apple TV 4K can't bitstream audio, but if/when it can, I will probably forget about buying discs, and just build up my digital library. If I were to go 💯% digital, I would like it to become a level playing field. i.e. that iTunes stores worldwide are all given the same A/V options. Many of our digital films have Dolby Atmos missing, when most other countries do have it. I recently bought John Wick 4 and Dungeons & Dragons on disc, because Atmos isn't included on the iTunes store  

But there are still drawbacks to "owning" streamed films... we never really own them, and we are at the mercy of companies falling out with Apple, and withdrawing their titles that we have already paid for. So far I have only "lost" one film from my iTunes library, but, still, it bears thinking about. I don't know what the answer is for collectors, the future seems to be unclear. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Just watched this on Itunes last night in 4K Dolby Vision. I have had it for a while on Itunes and image wise it wasnt the best. But Wow,this 4K Dolby Vision version looks amazing,the best i have seen it. Even the Audio was a big step up. I love it when these old "Classics" get upgrades like this.
