I can't seem to get this to work, tricky to get a vpn that actually gets through Turkey, but when I do it gives me a message that it "couldn't verify your country" message when I try to go and sign up for premium. I'll try some other VPNs tonight and see if I have better luck, but it may be because I still have a NZ payment profile. I have made a Turkish one also. Did you have to delete your NZ one? I'm guessing if I do, then google pay on the phone won't work any longer. Can you still purchase things from the play store? What currency does it charge you?

Yea the original VPN I tried was hopeless, but then I tried it with Nord and it was fine. I did have to delete my NZ payment profile after setting up the Turkish one. No biggie as I don't use Android for anything significant anymore.

All the details of what I did are further up on this thread, and the video I linked was helpful too. Something else I had trouble with was the fact that the first time I tried to do it, I was logged into Youtube using my YouTube channel name. I had to switch it to my personal YouTube profile first, then go through the rest as outlined in my post above.

So I think I have been succesful. I created a new payment profile, I didn't delete my original NZ one, used the NZ embassy address in Turkey. I tried Hola chrome extension and although I could get into Turkey youtube, I could not get to the payment page as it said there was the "couldn't verify your country" message. So I logged back out. Then I tried Urban VPN chrome extension, again I was able to get into the Turkey youtube page but when I got to the payment I hit the "couldn't verify your country" page. Decided to try youtube music while still behind the Urban VPN, and did manage to get to the page to select a subscription but nothing happened when I hit the button, tried numerous page refreshes. Then went in and had a look at my payment profile again, selected to the Turkey one, and checked it all. I think I may have disconected the VPN and reconnected at that stage, then I went back to youtube again and this time I was able to see the premium subscription options in TRY, and selected the fmaily and entered my CVC code and boom, it went through. I have 3 family members working on youtube premium but I'm not exactly sure how to invite the under 13's, I think I read earlier in this thread that it does work but I'll try and figure that out tomorrow.

EDIT - This was done via PC.

The frustrating thing is that YT Premium isn't available for parentally managed Google accounts so I've had to remove this off my eldest kid's account and my younger kid won't be able to use it via his current Google (ie, legit age) account at all. Not sure why this is the case?

Thought it's worth clarifying this: while both the sign-up information and my specific post-joining account information states that YT Premium is only available to the 'adult' YT members in a family group, in practice all members have access including those on managed kids' accounts.

Everyone's enjoying ad-free videos on YT, but none of us has yet bothered switching our music from Spotify. Not sure if it's worth shelling out for an app to copy over playlists (or is someone aware of an unlimited free app that can do this?) but unless we have them on YT we can't really tell if it's a good enough Spotify replacement so in a bit of a Catch 22...

I used this one here - https://app.tunemymusic.com/transfer

I'm unsure of the limitations, but I only had around 6-7 playlists. But it worked perfectly and is free

Thanks, but like all others I've found that one also has a pretty low limit, relative to the size of our playlists: "We offer 2 plans: ● A free plan to transfer up to 500 tracks between all music services and export your playlist to TXT or CSV."

In the end, we've just stuck with Spotify Premium Family for music; the relatively low cost of YT Premium Family via Turkey means it's justified solely on the basis of removing ads and allowing downloads.

I think I read somewhere (maybe above?) of a 'light' lower-cost variant of YT Premium that doesn't include music - does that exist? I've not been able to find info on this.

I used https://freeyourmusic.com/pricing

I got the basic one (pay once).  I purchased it years ago when it was about $10nz.  It has come in handy a few times when i have switched between music services.  Currently its $21NZ which if you are moving from family spotify to youtube music it pays for itself in 1 month

That would be a decent compromise, but I can't see it offered (in NZ)

I can see it on the YouTube app. What are you viewing it through?

Seems to be offered at random in YouTube. I had it offered twice and ignored it, then went looking for it and couldn't find it. Then earlier this week it popped up again. No ads, but no downloads and no playing in the background (Android here).

Currently on the one month trial.

Thanks - that's exactly the service I was thinking of; interesting to read it's not always or readily available. Do you recall if there was an option for a family account?

That said, both my kids also make use of the ability to listen to YT with the screen off so if that's excluded it may not meet the little darlings' needs!

The 'lite' version of YT Premium is only offered on individual plans and not family and not in all countries. I looked at but you would need to set it up for each family member and make sure you've signed up in a qualifying country.

Great to know this works ok - this was exactly the product I'd identified as the best option for us, so if I do make the call to try YT Music I'll know which app to use, thanks.

Meanwhile, in NZ the  YouTube Premium family plan will be increasing from NZ$19.99/month to NZ$29.99/month.

I have a feeling you may have been on a grandparented rate for a few months, as it was $29.99 when I looked to subscribe back as at the start of this thread, and the increase is mentioned back in this Nov 22 article. (I recall debating whether the benefits of YT Premium Family over Spotify Premium Family were worth the extra $7.50 a month.)

I tried the YouTube music app and I just couldn't adapt. I like the Spotify daily mixes too much to give them up. The Spotify algorithm just seems to work so well to give me 6 daily mixes that cover a broad spectrum of my music listening preference.
