BlakJak:

Streaming 4K costs them more. Why shouldn't they charge more?

Streaming 4K doesn't necessary cost them any more seeing your ISP are likely hosting an Open Connect appliance: https://openconnect.netflix.com/en/

So, it is just mainly local traffic for an ISP. Doesn't cost Netflix any more. Their HD/4K plan segregation where only the top tier get it is frankly stupid for this very reason.

At-least now they may have to rethink their plans given people will consider downgrading...

I’d be happy to pay $18.50 for 4K, one stream, but I’m not paying $25. It is only myself watching so the full cost without password sharing is not spread over any other people. If someone is password sharing they would probably be more sticky, as would have to arrange with other person when to have on and off especially if sharing costs.

I like to watch stuff in best quality possible, so rather then looking at lower cost plans just go without.

Do IPv6 devices show as different IP’s to IPv4 devices, if so that’s two devices that cannot be played together in same household.

Also where IP address’s are not sticky, each time they change the home location is going to need to be updated.

I don’t buy into it that the extra data of 4K increases costs massively. Other streamers do it at lower cost. Not all content is 4K.

YouTube has 4K for free (Ad supported) though it looked like they experimented with making it premium only and there was a backlash so they dropped it for now. It would’ve been about trying to get more people to subscribe, not the cost of 4K delivery. If cost was an issue doubt they would’ve back tracked.

Happy with the streaming services I have, made my decision a year ago. Get impression Netflix thinks people will cancel then rejoin up again later. Time will tell.

I already subscribe to Disney, AppleTV & Amazon so getting rid of Netflix was an easy decision to make, no sulking here

At the gym all the Life Fitness machines have Netflix available on them, guess there’s no longer any point in keeping Netflix on them or machines in a similar environment any more.

you are allowed to roam off your home location, just not for extended periods for I believe over 30days (before you have to use your login at the home location at least once).

make sense?

it was published in their press release….

I actually downgraded my plan yesterday. Literally nothing I want to watch is in 4K. Next step is to cancel.

When looking at the plans, I was a bit surprised that the basic plan was only 720p!

nzkc:

I think the fact they could not correctly identify their address was just the last straw. And fair enough to them too. Its their money.

Netflix seem to think I am in Papamoa. A week or two ago they seemed to think I was in Palmerston North. I am in Auckland.

And its too easy to say "ignore GeoIP because its not accurate here" (I know that), the problem is Netflix appear to be relying on it since they are showing it under your account.

Theyre showing it in their user interface, they're not relying on it for anything more than that from what I can see (and in other parts of the world it's probably pretty accurate).
If that's your frustration, you're getting frustrated because they've been lazy in their efforts to look clever. Not because that info is being used in any significant way to affect your service. It's literally meaningless, but outside of NZ it "looks pretty".

No it doesn’t make sense. If it was that easy you would just give the roaming code to the person sharing with. And then when you or someone at home logs in it would reset the 30 days if that was all there was to it.

Be a bit inconvenient to take gym equipment home once a month to log it in at home location.

From an Australian news show, they believe it won’t work at the gym at 2 minutes 7 seconds in.

Yeah, but then he quickly adds  "There might be ways to get access temporarily"  aka he doesn't know or have any idea...

Another news article:

https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/131256703/new-netflix-account-sharing-rules-dont-consider-split-families-17yearold-says

But an interesting statement from Netflix "unfortunately if the system detects a persistent use of Netflix outside the primary location it will be blocked".

So, I own a small commercial building where I work at regulalry and I often have Netflix on while doing other stuff. So, are they going to stop me from doing this?

What if I have a bach where I spend weekends, will that be considered persistant?

This could get ugly.

But NFlix state on their website that the location is only "general"....

So does this mean you can go to the Gym across town OK, but if you have a bach up country you're stuffed...

"We do not collect GPS data to try to determine the precise physical location of your devices. We use the IP address from the Netflix device or app to assume its general location (such as city, state/province, and postal code). For example, your primary location may be displayed as “near city, state/province.”"

This is beginning to scream car crash....

They may expect that users will just tell the freeloaders to offload? keep it simple?

I don't mind them trying to deal with freeloaders. The problem is that they are going to inconvenience a lot of paying customers that play by the rules.

I am fairly certain that I will be getting trouble with Netflix when I am traveling for extended periods of time and using Netflix. And when that happens I am not going to be happy. Because they will likely block me from using a service I am paying for and using per their terms and conditions.

Someone having a laugh, in an email from TVNZ today:

Unlike other streaming platforms TVNZ+ has no limit on the number of devices you use to login, or the households you watch from.

Sharing is caring. (But it's also free for friends and whānau to set up an account of their very own!)

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

Well, they aren't a paid service where millions of people are abusing their Ts and C's and it lacks the content of Netflix, polish and oh yeah 30 seconds of ads for 15 seconds of TV. They really have no right to be smug like that. It's not a like for like service.
