networkn: Well, they aren't a paid service where millions of people are abusing their Ts and C's and it lacks the content of Netflix, polish and oh yeah 30 seconds of ads for 15 seconds of TV. They really have no right to be smug like that. It's not a like for like service.

I have found this thread very interesting. And strangely for me, I can see both sides of the argument. Netflix, as the provider, can alter the T&Cs as they see fit I guess. It is not an essential service, so customers can choose to unsubscribe if they aren’t happy. The commercial reality of that will play out as the new policy bites.

The flip side is that I pay the extra for 4x4K streams. So what does it matter where they are being watched? One of my sons has just moved out to live with his partner in the local area. As a direct family member, I would like him to be able to have the same level of access he has enjoyed up until now. It may not seem like much, but with the cost of living in Auckland, even ‘cheap’ streaming services become a stretch. There is a fine line between that, and your offspring going away to Uni and then offering the account to all and sundry in their dorm though.

We probably only still have Netflix because the standard package is included with our broadband and topped up by me to the ultra package. Their product has become so homogenised that I struggle to be captured by too much that they offer any more. But that is for another thread…..

They don't get to share your power, and if they did it wouldn't be free, nor your insurance, or many other things. If they move out to start their new lives, they are independent. Most services even if they used less of a service they were making use of in your home, they would be expected to pay full price for it. NF is (IMO) providing them with the ability to have access to 100% of the library for 33% of the price. Only you can decide if that is value to you, but I feel have unreasonable expectations in this regard honestly.

So far Netflix doesn't seem to be able to tell where our locations are. It thinks the TV we use in Marlborough is in Nelson and doesn't seem to be able to notice the TV we have in Wellington as being in a different location.

It's going to be interesting for you - "To be considered part of the household, you must open the Netflix app or website and watch something while connected to the primary location's Wi_Fi network at least once every 31 days."

Is it a small tv you're taking to the primary location every 31 days?

Maybe they're banking on the inconvenience to convince people to buy an extra sub. Think of all those baches out there will all those TVs.

I haven't had any email or prompt in the app to set a primary location, just going to wait and see. If nothing happens then I'll stay with them. If my mum gets kicked off then I'll unsubscribe. This thread has been great entertainment with unstoppable forces meeting an immovable object. 🍿 Vote with your wallets.

I think this is the consensus of most people including myself. My parents occasionally watch it. We will see what happens. Theres no shortage of things to watch or alternative options. TBH I think netflix are treading dangerous territory. People might just un-subscribe.. and then they will have even less revenue.

Is it a small tv you're taking to the primary location every 31 days?

It's a 55" TV in Welly, that permanently stays there. We are effectively in the same situation as a bach owner.

If we can't keep doing what we're doing (within the 4 device limit) we'll just kick Netflix to touch.

I actually downgraded my plan yesterday. Literally nothing I want to watch is in 4K. Next step is to cancel.

When looking at the plans, I was a bit surprised that the basic plan was only 720p!

Yeah, I'm pretty fed up at paying for the premium plan soley to get 4K HDR, when they barely have anything in 4K HDR (even new titles that were produced that way). I'd don't know if it's a licensing thing, but it's bullshit.

I'm pretty close to pulling the pin and cancelling outright as very little of their original content is even worth watching (and if it is they cancel it after 1 season anyway).

While most of Disney's new Star Wars and Marvel content is garbage, I give them credit that their STARZ catalogue content is all the highest quality available (lots of 4K HDR).
