I haven't had any either but don't use a Smart TV app - I use it either through Vodafone TV at home or on my phone when elsewhere.
We have 3 x ATV's , and have never watched Netflix on any of the Smart TV's in the house, and so far (touch wood) we haven't had any notifications or on screen messages etc to set a primary location.
So at this stage, does appear limited to TV's, not 3rd party streaming devices.
First time after getting the email (Feb 9) that we started the Netflix app on one of our two Vodafone TV boxes, we got on-screen prompts to set our primary location. So it seems at least some 3rd party streaming devices get classified as watching on a TV by Netflix.
We haven't had anything from Netflix here either. Pretty much watch only through App on new Samsung TV. No email; no prompts on TV ...... yet!
Not heard a peep from Netflix in this household. We use a combination of devices for watching Netflix at our convenience/leisure - SmartVu, 3 x tablets, 3 x phones, 1 x web browser. Only have a standard account and don't share a password with anyone not living here so theoretically the changes shouldn't affect us but I will be interested to read about how they affect people who travel for work etc., as that's something I sometimes do.
Lightbulb:
I think I've got this right but can someone confirm.
At my primary location (Wellington) I have an 'unsmart' tv. I access netflix via an appletv connected to the tv's hdmi port. I can't set my primary location using the apple tv. There is no option to do so under the get help settings. Is that correct or have I missed something??
At my holiday home I have a smart tv that I use to view netflix. I've just been prompted by netflix to set my primary location, However, I don't have the option of setting this as anything other than my holiday home location. Is that correct or have I missed something again??
If I set my primary location as my holiday home, then it seems that I can continue to use my apple tv in Wellington provided that I connect to netflix at my holiday home using the apple tv at least once every month. Is that correct or have I missed something yet again??
If I don't set my primary location, as prompted to on our holiday home tv, then netflix will do this for me. I'm not sure what the outcome will be, but as I access netflix more at our holiday home, and the fact that our holiday home is the only place we access netflix using a smart tv, I would guess that netflix will nominate our holiday home as the primary location. Again, have I got this right?
Assuming the analysis above is correct, then I'll be cancelling netflix. However, I'm hoping that somewhere along the line, I've missed something........
My understanding is exactly as you have written -
- Primary location is set only on a smart tv
- Phones and ipads cant be primary - phones/ipads won't get prompt - ignore the thread
- If smart tv used/primary location not set it will default from Feb 20th - but only if use a smart tv - if don't ignore this thread
If a primary location is set, you must use the same net/wifi every 30 days on the other devices.
We have 2 smart TVs using Netflix, plus some iOS devices. Haven't had any emails or prompts to set primary location.
We might have signed up using a DNS service before Netflix was available here though. I honestly don't remember, but maybe Netflix thinks we have a US account even though we're in NZ and very seldom use the DNS service to change region away from NZ.
We've never paid with a US payment method, and currently it's billed through Spark.
I setup a Dish SmartVU dongle this week and when I logged in to Netflix it asked me to confirm my primary location which said I was in Mt Maunganui, Tauranga. I guess they consider that Close enough.
Will be interesting to see what happens when my IP address changes again.

I find with 2degrees on a static connection that the connection thinks I'm on the south Island although I'm peering in Auckland... Be interesting to see how that affects me given its not reflecting the correct island let alone city/region.

If the IP you're using goes back to their landline service's history as Snap (HQ'd in Christchurch) then this makes sense.
At the risk of saying it again - just because geolocation says you're in a particular location, doesn't mean Netflix is going to assume that location is accurate and use _that_ as its measure. It's just the UX presenting that info to you. Because Geolocation in NZ more specific than being in, well, NZ, doesn't work... and Netflix should know this, and they'll be using a stack of other metadata to figure out where 'home' is.

I mean it's common sense. If using IP via location isn't accurate, then they can't use it as the sole way to determine your location otherwise tens of thousands if not millions of people wouldn't be able to operate normally. It would have fallen over at the first subset of customers they trialled it on.
The fact the world didn't end then, means the system is more complex or intelligent than that. The last thing Netflix needs is 50% of it's customers calling up with access issues.
Every negative interaction a customer has with systems makes them less likely to continue their subscription.
I've yet to see any signs the world is ending as a result of these changes.
I got the email early or mid last week.
I had already set up a VPN on our router for our son for this (he's a uni student out of town but I still consider him part of our household living at our address - he's only away about 10 weeks or however short the academic year is).
I started the process - got the email with the code to enter into the TV - then it occurred to me there could be problems with my wife who had just left on an overseas business trip - so I didn't take it any further. We've now realised neither of us have watched Netflix since then, and looking at the list of devices our son hasn't signed in for the last 6 weeks, so we have decided that once we've watched All Quiet on the Western Front we'll cancel.
Thanks for bringing it to our attention Netflix!

Hopefully enough people quit, so price drops here.
Price drops were between 20% and 60%.
They won’t back down on password sharing but looks like they could drop prices if enough of a back lash.

What makes you think this is related to the sharing crackdown? None of those regions have had that implemented yet.
There is no reason to believe we will see a price decrease in NZ.
