Such as?

MotoGP, LET I think although they may have the odd highlights. WRC, Heineken Cup in Europe, Soccer. Spark Sport had a lot of sport, most of which I had no interest in, TVNZ+ even visually has bugger all

I assumed the content would be pretty much identical, but it seems to be heavily pruned

You do know it’s the middle of the European summer? There’s no rugby or football on. TVNZ has had the rights for 4 days. Have any of those events been on since the 1st of July?

Fair enough I did mention that on another similar post, but given that SS had a lot of sport and now there is hardly anything, does seem rather odd. Hardly anything is even an understatement

Have we still got this issue where the Nvidia Shield isn't on the "supported" devices list despite it being a perfectly legit and fully licensed Android TV device that's still receiving updates?

Or is that just the Freeview app?

Anyway, can't say I'm that surprised about this whole DRM thing. It'll be stipulated in the streaming rights contracts so they probably haven't got much choice.

While it's pretty much impossible to buy a "dumb" TV these days my philosophy would always be to buy on the basis of the important stuff like picture quality, ignore any smart capabilities and use a Chromecast/Shield/Apple TV type device.

The likes of LG and Samsung are notorious for only providing updates to their current model year TVs and sometimes the proceeding year if you're very lucky. Anything older than that has pretty much been abandoned. Maybe you've got bit more of a fighting chance with Sony who run Android but even then the screen itself will outlast the "smarts" by a considerable margin.

I have a Nvidia Shield personally but yes it does.

Also way easier to dodge geo-blocking restrictions and use overseas FTA streaming apps using a separate box. 😀

Not trying to be picky, but it is

Yes, Vitality is on as is Sardinia - Island X Prix?. Adelaide NSW Super netball, thats ok

Spain vs France U19, cool... Diamond League Stockholm, also cool... Chine vs Japan Asia Cup unsure what sport

. Spain vs Turkey U19 World Cup

Rothsay International, wow that must be important, Eastbourne Final unsure what that is, ah tennis.

Latest Highlights RX of Sweden

LET just has highlights. Plus the Tour of Southland...

Spark Sport has migrated to TVNZ+, but its rubbish compared to the original. Not disrespecting the sports that they show but its NOT a migration by any measure.

Its migrating everything but get rid of anything that costs. That is NOT the New Home of Sport, by any measure. Now if they kept everything from Spark Sport except expensive MotoGP, then that makes sense. but its FAR less than that . Just be honest and say sport is expensive we bought SS for a song but its not sustainable. Not hard.

Did you actually have look and see what they said they would broadcast? A fair chunk of it is in the northern hemisphere winter/NZ summer. Over the NZ summer there will be a large amount of sport shown, especially cricket.

https://www.1news.co.nz/2023/06/07/tvnz-confirms-the-free-to-air-sports-it-will-broadcast-from-july/

All Super Smash T20 matches, and domestic one day finals.

England and Wales cricket, starting with the second Ashes Test against Australia. It also includes the Black Caps in England.

2023 Hockey NZ Oceania Cup

NFL - two live matches a week and one delayed in regular season, 12 playoff games and the Superbowl.

MotoGP

World Rally Championship

WTA Tennis and the US Open

Finals of 2023 Suncorp Super Netball and Australian Diamonds Netball

FIBA basketball including the men's World Cup featuring the Tall Blacks

Women’s Super League, FA Cup and Arnold Clark Cup Football

Diamond League Athletics

Ladies European Tour Golf

United Rugby Championship

Lakapi Samoa (Manu Samoa Rugby)

I have recently set up an old laptop as a "box" and just access the various streaming services through a web browser.

It's fast and easier to navigate between "apps" (websites) with a wireless keyboard than with any remote.

And an added bonus is that I can now play a few games from the couch on the same machine too. Kids love it.
