I would gladly pay for a service but yeah if we're still waiting 3 or 4 months or even 3 or 4 weeks then nothings going to change as to how I watch my TV shows. I would like a service to be able to allow us to keep it for a time (or indefinitely) and unmetered traffic would help.

Apparently Quickflix has been signing distribution deals with HBO, BBC Worldwide, NBC and alike over the past few months. They have also recently added an HBO representative to the board after a $10million investment.

It will certainly be interesting to see what their library contains, although I somehow doubt it will have shows that have recently aired overseas, more likely just those that have been released on DVD.

They presently have 10 TV series available, 3 of which are Blackadder, I can't fault most of the choices really, but can't help think perhaps they have gone public a little prematurely, with just 10 old series, and all those "Image Coming Soon" on the Movies side of things.

First impressions from looking at Quickflix site.

Big pluses:

1. Advertised Sony TV/PS 3 integration
2. $10/mo seems not bad, even with the limited TV content, the "standard package" movies, seem in fairly good company, some great classics, some newer ones too that I would have thought be PPV.

In addition, the PPV cost seems competitive with Sky ($6.99), and it seems they've got closer to DVD release access, in fact, I don't think "The Debt" (is it even on DVD here - it is in Australia?) is even planned for April on Sky.

Hmmm.

Just got the press release, and will post soon. A couple of things:

- Orcon unmetering is from 1st May. This explains why Slingshot is saying they'll be first. Thy just have to start from today.

- It sounds like other ISP are also going to offer unmetered traffic to Quickflix but the release only hints at this

Despite already offering NZ’s biggest broadband data plans, Slingshot is establishing a range of content partnerships so even more internet content can be ‘unmetered’ for its customers.

Taking the lead ahead of all other ISPs, Slingshot is today announcing itself as the first ISP to unmeter NZ's newest online movie subscription service, Quickflix.

Slingshot’s Chief Executive, Mark Callander, says “the decision to unmeter content from selected web sites and content providers has proven to be very popular, so we are now extending this policy to as many other content providers as possible, starting today with Quickflix.”

“It is great to see new business models emerging with players such as Quickflix and Spotify now focusing on the NZ market. This is good for competition and consumer choice in the longer term, and even better for Slingshot’s customers who can access this content for free.”

Callander continues “By extending our free data policy to Quickflix, Slingshot is playing a very important role in the delivery of this service and most ISPs will probably follow suit. Given the relatively low monthly data caps in NZ compared with overseas, customers could very quickly hit their monthly limit and incur additional charges - we don’t want our Slingshot customers to have to worry about data caps and it is time we caught up with the rest of the world.”

Quickflix CEO Chris Taylor said "We applaud the decision by Slingshot to unmeter our service. In doing so, Slingshot has identified the appeal and likely uptake of services like ours, and want to ensure their customers can enjoy the benefits of Quickflix without concern for their data caps. In the current environment, access to premium zero-rated content will be a key consideration for consumers when choosing their ISP."

Callander concluded “the United States has for some time enjoyed subscription-based online movies and TV shows on services such as Netflix, which now accounts for 30% of all online data traffic in the USA. Until now, we have been deprived of access to such services and we are delighted to be a part of this emerging content market in NZ."

They should have a free trial like Netflix does. I don't want to sign up until I see how it goes first. 7 days would be enough.

The Herald article says QuickFlix will not have any HBO content in NZ, as Sky has the exclusive rights to the entire catalogue for SoHo.

Looks like those who were hopping for HBO content are going to be disappointed..

"The only other difference in the offering was that Quickflix New Zealand would not have a package of shows from Home Box Office because Sky had signed an exclusive deal for New Zealand rights to HBO programming, which is the foundation for its premium channel Soho."

I suspect that this will be the problem with all TV content. Unless it's been shown here you won't get to see it and the same will apply to movies. Unless it's available on DVD or BD here you won't see it either..

tried signing up. got to credit card screen then failed repeatedly (on both internet explorer AND firefox).

tried calling helpdesk. office houses are 11am to midnight, so cannot do anything.

If you are going to launch, at least allow customers to sign up!!!

FAIL launch Quickflix.
