This program came about because I was sick of getting a ding announcing a text and not knowing if it was important or not. So I made a program that compares the number of the incoming message with the contacts list in your phone and reads out the name of the person. I have used it for a year and I love it, however workmates, and wife have different opinions :-)

I released it to the play store last week for others to have fun with. You can customize the message it speaks out as well. It does lots of other stuff, with a widget and popup.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=smsinterceptor.com

Any more ideas for it?

I might incorporate a system where it automatically checks what activity you are doing at the moment, such as driving and sends an autoresponder back with " 'Your name' is driving at present and will contact you back shortly".

I typed 'Speak SMS Sender' - which I understood to be the name of the app - into the Play Store search box and was puzzled when I could not find your app. I scrolled down about 20 apps before I found it. Thought you might like to know this.

Will give it a whirl now. Cheers

EDIT: The app shows under the name "smsintece..." [sic]? Assuming this is meant to be "sms interceptor", it might be a good idea to spell interceptor correctly as a starting point.

On my HTC One the formating of the text (looks like it is meant to be a list of contact names and numbers?) on the main page is jammed up and barely readable. Overall looks very ugly. Sorry, will have to delete the app.

EDIT 2: Wanted to give this the benefit of the doubt so uninstalled and reinstalled. It's seems simply unusable. Let me know if I have done something wrong but otherwise, as they say on Dragons' Den:   "... for that reason, I'm out".

Thanks.
I might have tried to hard to stick everything on one screen. I will split it up across sliding panels I think.

It doesn't seem to. The service is just waiting until a text message comes in then it runs. Its not like its polling the net.

I have noticed with JellyBean that with power saving turned on the voice that says who is calling can break up, I suspect the phone is coming from a very low power usage to normal while the voice is operating.

I really like the ivona voice of the Australian woman, that sound the most natural to my ears (I am sure theres a joke in there somewhere.) So I recommend installing Ivona.

I think I saw the problem with the first poster, I have the lists set with points instead of DIP so the text may appear bigger than it should. I never really set out to make this for anything other than my old Galaxy S2 :-)

I will work on it tomorrow, and fix it up more.

Haven't looked, but you can set custom ring tones for individual contacts. Can't you just do that for Text notification, or does it not segregate down like this for SMS alerts?

Technically I could. All I have to do is make a database that holds the contact and the associated ringtone, but using the voice removes the need for a dedicated ringtone as it tells you who the text is from. Anyway I don't like the annoying ringtones thats why i made the program :-)

Works fine on my Nexus 4. Auto-response while driving would be a great feature.

Great :-)

I am working on a program at present using Googles new tools that returns back the activity you are doing at any time, without using GPS. Its fun, it knows when I am running driving etc, but not so great for cycling, sometimes it thinks I am in a car others that I am walking.

Anyway over the next few weeks if I get time I will incorporate it into the app so that it autoresponds when it detects car.

Pretty nice looking app. One suggestion though. On the Alias setup screen, the keyboard covers over the field for the Message Intro field. Perhaps you could host the existing view in a ScrollView?

Downloaded/installed as you requested. Still looks dreadful and is unusable on my HTC One.

The text in what appears to to be a list of contacts is very large and not readable.

hi - works really well on my S3! Just out of interest what tools did you use to create the app?
