I just got connected and neither my Linksys WAG200G or a WAG120N that I borrowed would connect.  They both worked a year ago in the same location/cabinet, so not sure why they don't work now.  The Chorus guy had a "Telecom" router that connected well so that suggests having the right modem is key.

So I'm in the market for a new router with good, stable performance that works with iTalk VOIP.

Wondering about an ASUS DSL-N55U or could I go cheaper and ready for VDSL with a DrayTek Vigor 130?

Any comments on those or others that work or don't work with BigPipe would be much appreciated.

All should work, sounds like your wiring isn't up to scratch really...

defiantly sounds like a wiring issue, and simply the "telecom" modem that was tested with managed a sync over the dodgy wiring.

When you say the chorus guy's modem connected,  do you mean it actually connected up and was able to browse the net, or was it just syncing?

And when you say your modems don't connect, same question?


If neither of your modems worked it's more likely there is a wiring fault.  Did the chorus guy test his modem in the same jackpoint you are using, or did he test it from somewhere else?

I hope it's not dodgy wiring as the wiring goes straight from the external connection to a patch panel where a modem can be installed.  The Chorus guy apparently tested his modem at the external point outside the house and in the patch panel where I tried my modems.  Sounds like it held a consistent sync to the cabinet for a few minutes, but may not have looked for internet access.

how confident are you that your patch panel is all good?  If that is the problem, Chorus won't fix it for free unfortunately and may charge you for a 'no fault found' (probably, you never know you might get a really nice Chorus guy :P  )

The phone line actually just comes into the cabinet the patch panel is in, so sorry for making that clear.

Got the DrayTek 130 today.  Connected it up and it synced very happily, with ~15Mbps/1.1Mbps on ADSL2+ Annex A.  "Loop Att." is the attenuation figure I guess, is at 18-19.  I'm on the edge of the VDSL range from the Chorus map but these figures suggest to me that VDSL's not going to work.

Happy enough with the slightly lower speed compared to the Vodafone cable, but at least I'm free to use however much data I like.  Just a pity that cloud backups will take along time.

yes, sounds like you are outside of range for VDSL.

After reading about instability with the DrayTek 130 I thought I'd update the firmware to the latest release.

3.7.1.1                 Ok                            Original on the modem when I got it. 
3.7.5 STD             Would not connect      From the NZ DrayTek site.  Would continually cycle tying to connect but didn't connect in the hour I left it.
3.7.5 Modem 1      Ok                            From the international DrayTek site. 

Not sure whether the Modem 1 version is good for me because it copes with something funny on my line or whether it's to do with compatibility with the Chorus cabinet and/or BigPipe.
