I'm on the Bigpipe 200/200 UFB plan.

Since Bigpipe doesn't require VLAN tagging, I had a network of Apple Airport Extremes around our large house, which were all connected via cat 6 cable.

It was a great setup, except that when Bigpipe went down for maintenance, the Airport Extreme wouldn't reconnect to the Internet unless I manually restarted it. There are times when I'm not around to do that and I have applications at home I need to access.

So I replaced the Airport Extreme that was connected to the ONT with a Bigpipe-supplied HG659. It's been downhill ever since.

Every so often, the modem just stops working. I can't even reach its web UI via a wired PC connected directly to the router, and the only resolution is to unplug it and plug it back in again.

That's a bit of a problem when I need to access files on my NAS while away and no one's around to whip the modem out of its trance.

I don't think my setup is too unorthodox. Since seeing if a factory reset would resolve the issue, I made sure I used Bigpipe's DNS rather than Unotelly. I assigned two internal static IP addresses to devices where I use port forwarding, and opened 3 ports for specific applications I need. I think that's it.

It's possible this unit is just dodgy and that a replacement will resolve it. Hopefully Bigpipe will come through for me there.

I'd be interested to find out how reliable people find the HG659 in general. I know Spark and Vodafone supply it, so presumably it's been well-tested and they have confidence in it.

If a replacement doesn't resolve it, what alternatives would people recommend? I'd like the modem I paid for to stay up, but I'm willing to give it up as a lost cause because I just need something reliable, so would appreciate suggestions.

Hi Jonathan,

 

 

 

does sound like you might have a faulty unit there.

 

We've found pretty low fault rates for our modem (fewer than 1% of all the modems we've sold so far have been returned as faulty) - but there is always going to be one or two, and we'll happily swap it out for you if you get in touch through the formal channels (via our website)

by the way, how are you finding the Bigpipe app from an accessibility perspective?  We made sure to take this into account when designing it, but it was a learning experience for our team so we're always looking for feedback on how we can improve the app's accessibility features.

It looks really good. I've found no significant issues.

Since I have the 200/200, I don't need to go in often and optimise, but doing so is perfectly accessible and I appreciate the notifications they're pushed.

Thanks for giving this some thought. You guys are doing a fantastic job.

Just following up with the conclusion of this in case anyone's considering the HG659.

Bigpipe replaced my HG659 with a second one, but after a week, it locked up again requiring a restart as described in my original post.

Bigpipe couldn't have been more helpful so no complaints there. Definitely the best ISP I've been with.

I do have around 30 devices, including computers, smartphones, a bunch of Sonos devices, Apple TV etc, so it's a busy home network and so that may be a factor. But there's no point having this great UFB connection if I can't rely on it.

So I took some time to read a lot of threads here and decided to give the Asus RT-AC87U a shot. I've had it for four weeks now and it's been totally rock solid. Great UI, the iOS app is good, Wi-Fi coverage is exceptional, and it just stays up. Oh, good to have hairpin NAT back as well.

So I wouldn't recommend the HG659 based on two units that couldn't do the job for me, but this Asus is doing very well and Bigpipe remains a solid ISP with great email support.

I also have a HG659 on Bigpipe (albeit currently VDSL) and was having similar strange issues whereby some websites would timeout; couldn't access the web interface at all from my Ethernet connected PC (could from Wifi) and couldn't browse the internet at all without IPv6 enabled on my network adaptor.

 

Once I finally got around to investigating the issue just this week I found a stray VMware virtual network adaptor on my PC was configured to the same IP as my router (192.168.1.1); set that to DHCP and problem solved.

 

Is it possible you have / had an IP conflict on your network?

I wouldn't rule it out, but I didn't have any issues before the HG659 came into my life, and have had none now that it's mercifully gone.

Wifi issues, random reboots, random factory resets etc. After months of complaining, a new firmware came out which appeared to fix the wifi issues but nothing else....  seems to be the HG659's are dodgy across the board no matter who you source them from IMHO.

I've had a HG659 (VF) for 5 days now and I am onto factory reset number 3.





Life is too short to remove USB safely.
