Hi All,

I've just signed up with BigPipe on a VDSL connection.  So far my download connection speed is around 23Mbps, and my upload speed is 832Kbps.  Does that sound right to anyone?

I have a draytek 2860Vn+ modem, downstream attenuation is 26dB, SNR is 9, upstream attentuation is showing as 0dB (<- this has me stumped ), and SNR is 8.

So far they are saying to wait out the 10 day "tuning" period.  But I feel that's not really going to make much difference.

There is a box near my modem which has a CAT5/6 cable connected that runs out to the ETP.  So I'm assuming there's a filter in there.  I will check on the weekend.

Any ideas?  Or is this as good as it gets.

That sounds like you have an ADSL inline filter installed.

I would suggest you have it replaced  with the holy grail of geekzone to achieve VDSL speeds. The VDSL master filter/splitter. The attenuation is on the higher side but you may have a fault on your line or the ADSL splitter (If there is one) playing games.

Pic of the filter so we can tell if it's VDSL rated. Generally, if it's got three pairs coming out it should be VDSL rated, 2 pairs for one of the old ADSL ones.

Having said that, 26dB downstream attenuation is very much at the high end of the scale - marginal for decent VDSL. It may be as good as it gets.

Ok, so I couldn't wait to check the ETP and there's no filter what so ever.  I don't have a phone connected to any of the other jacks, but who knows if there's an issue somewhere.   I'll get a master filter on the weekend and install it and see how that goes.

If your modem is connected to the only jack, and that jack has cat5 or better back to the ETP and there are no other branches etc in the wiring then there is probably no point in getting a filter. It's not going to do anything for a naked connection.

Can you confirm that's how the wiring is?

It would be perfectly normal if you're some distance from the cabinet or exchange and on the edge of VDSL2 coverage.

Same for me, VDSL with Bigpipe in Titahi Bay.  MAster Filter installed, about 23 down but less than 1 up.  Really wish I could get the upload to be better.

I'll get a filter on the weekend and see if that improves it.  Was hoping for better upload so I could at least host a bit.

We've got a Spark VDSL that is similar.

23mbps down, and between 1 & 1.3mbps up.

I hate the 998 band plan, would much rather have 18mbps down, and 2-3mbps up.

If you only need a single jack (for the modem) just connect that at the ETP rather than bothering with a filter.

I could but it's a rental.  I don't want to leave the other jacks not connected.  It's easy enough to buy a filter and connect it up.

I'll set it up so that the rest of the house can unplugged using an RJ45 in ETP.  That if I ever needed a phone I can reconnect it easily.

the thing is its made it worse for a small number of users but its made it better for a whole lot more

being in a rental, certainly recommend going with that path.

When you move on, they will love you for having everything perfect for the next tenants - Hell, even a selling point for the techy folk out there

Yeah, I'd give up a little downstream speed for upstream.  If it doesn't improve things then it'll be back to ADSL2.   At least on ADSL2 I should get 1Mbps upstream.

Can't wait until fibre is here.....bring on June 2018......that just feels like a long time away....
