My guess would be that some ISPs have one handover in Christchurch.

Spark and larger ISPs may have handovers in multiple exchanges, or some way of having diversity of aggregation with the UFB network.

2degrees initially went down, but they definitely have multiple handovers, perhaps something went wrong with the automatic failover or it required a manual change to move traffic away from the failure.

Complete stab in the dark without really knowing much about the UFB architecture or any inside ISP knowledge..

Big pipe told me Enable had sustained damage to part of their network caused by a burst water pipe.

There is a problem with the Enable network – caused by a burst water main in Christchurch – that is affecting Bigpipe and other ISPs. Bigpipe fibre customers in Christchurch will not have connectivity. Enable’s network engineers have been working through the previous night and all day today to fix the flooded connections. Work has hit several snags throughout the day causing estimates for the time of a full fix to be inaccurate. At this point in time a fix is expected sometime this evening, but this may change.

I might have to find another book :D

The only bugger is that I had just signed up for the prime video 7 day trial just before the internet went down :(

Someone tweeted to ccc that there was a burst water main on Manchester street. Timestamp was within an hour of my connection going down.

Incidentally, back online for me 3mins ago!!!

If a burst watermain can take out Enable and Chorus fibres it doesn't bode well for longevity / reliability / robustness etc given how often they burst in Christchurch!

Oh that explains the no connectivity we experienced. Thought it was just because we're borrowing internet from the neighbour (no wifi signal).
