SirHumphreyAppleby:

What Bigpipe announces, if anything, may also not be suitable.

What would be something that's suitable for you?

Some providers have done quite bad deployments of V6 which makes running services over V6 (for example, a web server with dual stack IPv4 and V6) impossible. You get V6 but the subnet either changes at the drop of the hat, is unreliable or worse, doesn't actually route back correctly. I could name some ISP's that do any of these things but I am not in here to name and shame.

Static, obviously.

I need to be able to set PTR records. Currently I can do this by setting a reverse delegation in SixXS, so I have control over my entire /48.

Bigpipe kindly set the PTR for my IPv4 address, but I can't imagine they'd be too thrilled if I wanted to do this for a bunch of IPv6 addresses.

If they only provided /64 prefixes, it would require reconfiguring my network which is currently split in to three different subnets. If they only provided a single, or small range of addresses, that would completely break stateless auto configuration, but I don't believe for a moment they would do that to us.

I have it on good authority that IPv6 is days away and not weeks, there should be an announcement thread coming about this early next week.

I'll sharpen my pitchfork just in case...

There is honestly no need to :) You can trust @Flickky. If even a "beta" doesn't happen in the next week I'll change providers to My Republic.

That is how much faith I have...

right guys, this is how we get rid of murfy atlast!

Hey they do have a referral program: https://myrepublic.net/nz/refer/ but I'll be likely more punchy on the forums. It is for the best that I stay with an ISP I actually like :)

Don't panic. Minimoke will stop them from closing down. All he needs to do is add this to his TiVo class action.

@SirHumphreyAppleby and co - see http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=158&topicid=210440 for the IPv6 beta thread for Bigpipe users.

Guess we won't see @michaelmurfy move to MyRepublic.... for now.

I too was gutted when I saw the email from SixXS about shutting down.

I spent a bit of time researching ISPs in NZ who might be able to pick up the slack, but then doing a bit more looking into it, I found out that pretty much every ISP in New Zealand supports a slightly older standard called IPv4.  It's not quite as flexible, but it does seem to be more backwards compatible with existing services.  Might be a good short term solution anyway.

Cheers,

muppet
