Inphinity: If these people won't socialise with you if you don't smoke and drink, they're probably not the sort of people who are good to be socialising with. Steer clear.

Totally Agree, Very well said, Its not that they wont socialize but trying to meet new people when going out some times weekends / nights at bar or party type environments, a lot of the women i meet ask me why i dont drink, just this other day I was on a date and she asked me for a smoke.. just makes me feel socially awkward.

johntynz: Don't Smoke, if you "need" to smoke to be social get one of the electronic ones without niccotine in them? at least then, you can be seen as smoking and be social without the addictive substance in it.

personally I smoke Dunhill Reds

The electronic ones feel a bit dodgy and gay :D.

Dunhill Reds look real nice, well packaged, but not sure how they look in nz packaging, how much are they in the gas stations for a pack of 20's?

Cigarettes are the same price where ever you go for the same size/brand.

Don't start smoking.. they are bad for you . Everyone will tell you that -  even smokers (and I am addicted to smoking)

You would buy a certain brand because of the packaging? Most people choose a brand to smoke as the first/2nd smoke they had from someone else was that  brand and you get used it it. Every brand/type of cigarette is different "tasting" - its a little hard to explain for non-smokers.

Here is a hint.. its illegal to smoke INSIDE a bar.. only outside.. so don't go outside! no one smokes inside the bar.. so you can't get peer pressure to smoke. :-)

have you thought of how much smoking costs?? Do you have $5000-$10000+/year to smoke ? There are plenty of other things to spend your money on. You want an excuse to tell other people why you don't smoke..  tell them your saving up to buy a car/university/go overseas as smoking is expensive. Make the smokers feel guilty they are smoking/jealous you are saving our money.

How did you become addicted to smoking? did you start as a social smoker to like me buying throat cancer boxes to becoming an addict? I mean I smoke many things including roll up cigarets from friends, but never felt addicted to go and spend money towards it.

I no longer drink, haven't for half a decade now, so what will I do inside the bar? not much lol. Bars down here are pretty classy with an open section to drink, socialize & smoke under the moon.

I already have a nice car, going to university & going overseas. I really need $5000 - $10,000 a year to start smoking(?) And actually be alive by the year end? :-)

I hardly see my self buying a pack a month even if I were to pick it up as a habbit. I just wanted to carry one, thought better packaging = good brand more rich in quality. maybe I can offer it to people, I dont know its late...it sounds stupid, I know. lol.

If you want to smell like a cess pit - smoke.

If you want to lose your teeth - smoke.

Otherwise chew gum smile

I'm not adverse to sounding preachy :-)
I'm an addict and I wish to hell I'd never started. I started out as a social smoker and it was pretty much to fit in with my social group. Everyone smoked, I didn't, but I started and I still remember the cocky me telling people I was just a social smoker and would never get hooked. I still thought I was a social smoker when my couple of cigarettes a week became a couple a day. Then a pack a day. At one stage, I hit 60 a day (that was a long time ago). A LOT of people smoke a pack a day- roughly $150 a week. Do the sums, $5,000-$10,000 a year isn't uncommon. You might be one of the lucky ones and remain an occasional social smoker but most people don't get that lucky. Nicotine is highly addictive and it's only when you look back that you realise when the first signs were that you were getting hooked.

I hear where you are coming from but take it from me, it's just not worth it. You can hang with the smoking crowd without smoking. If anyone asks, say, "nah, I just put one out", in a social setting nobody will even notice. If you must make the motions get a nicotine-free e-cigarette. Read up on them at Naked Vapour and espouse the benefits and savings of vaping instead of smoking. In time, some of that social group are likely to get curious and switch themselves. Sometimes, being a bit different is the coolest thing :)

Smoking is a sh*t of a thing. Please don't start.

I haven't posted on geek zone in years but your post came through and it seriously pi$$ed me off...

1. You've already complete reserved yourself to the idea that you need to smoke to fit in

2. They won't actually make you fit in they will make you die and your last breath will be on a respirator

3. I don't mean to be rude but no woman will touch you unless she has adult onset diabetes and has given up on life or something similar...

4. "2 a week" is still heaps in my opinion... Gross dude!!!

For number 3 I am only guessing at your sexual orientation and I don't mean to do that but seriously a lot of women are like... "No smokers"

I smoked for 8 years and had the same attitude as you for some reason.

The root cause of your problem is where you live by the sounds of it.. move! :-(

Just buy a Coke at the bar and get the bar tender to put it in a short glass.  Tell your mates it is rum & coke.  Problem solved :)

Have you though about giving Vaping a try? I had been a heavy smoker for 8 years and now smoke free since april, not that you smoke a lot but is an option and lot of fun.

As another smoker, Just wanted to summarise what everyone else has said - If you buy a packet and expect to just smoke 1 or 2 a week, you are definitely kidding yourself.

Another reason this is a bad idea, I find cigarettes do go off over time once opened so if you only have one or 2 a week, by the 3rd week they will definitely taste bad.

My view: If you are going to smoke, commit to it fully or better yet just don't.

Doing your best is much more important than being the best.

I am smoker but I have reduced to about a pack of Marlboro a week
Its an expensive habit, I think I could give up if I really tried hard.
I dont carry a pack to work and only have one at home.

I will not comment on your decision to start smoking.

But I WILL say that if you do want to  get health insurance, you will need to declare
that and it will raise your premiums,   no excuse saying you are a social smoker because
they still classify you as a smoker.

If you currently have health or life insurance , you might need to have a word with them
as your situation has changed.   Worse case is you have a medical condition and
you need treatment only to be declined as you  never disclosed that you have started smoking.

I sincerely hope that you dont start ,         ........ cough cough!

cheers.

Roughly $19.60,  give or take $1 depending on where in the country you are vs discouter dairies etc

and with using the E-Cig's you cuold advise your friends that you are trying to give up, and in turn they may start to give up alongside
-- Once again, I smoke, i'm addicted, Don't Start.

You could try rollies, though it takes a bit of practice to get a good even roll, and you may find that most far northerners who smoke, will smoke rollies. A cheaper overall option. You can roll as thin or as thick as you like.

Though the packet will go stale after a month or so, and lose the tobacco taste, and taste like soapy straw. A good incentive to stop :-)

At lease you can take a couple of gasps, and then let it go out for an hour, or just hang into it, and then re-light when necessary.

Port Royal is nicely flavoured.

Alternatively, have a cigar. You're gonna go far, you're gonna fly high,
You're never gonna die, you're gonna make it if you try; they're gonna love you
(Pink Floyd ...)

Just don't inhale into the lungs ....

I didn't know Cigars were popularly sold in NZ. Yea Cigars look classy and nice, I would rather get those instead of cigarets if I can. Where do you get Cigars from? Which brands and how much are they? :-)

1) Don't buy a pack to smoke 1 cigarette a week, they will go stale
2) Buy an e cigarette, they're fine for having the activity of social smoking
3) (once again) Don't buy a pack, it will make you smoke more
4) If you really feel like a cigarette, carry a dollar around in your pocket and offer it to a smoker in return for a cigarette
