kotuku4:
Hammerer: I see nobody has mentioned the Gillette Sensor 3 disposable razor 8-pack for $15 or less if on special. It's a good compromise between price and performance ie they're not the best blades but the convenience is very good.

I'm currently a quick shave artist, using Bic cartridge 3 or 4 blade disposable, after shower, rub on liquid hand soap instead of foam or gel. Probably spend two minutes shaving.  I have a pack sitting in the draw so good for 3-6 months, just as good as the other more expensive cartridge systems I've tried in the past. I found some of the 5 or more blades clogged up too easy, hard to rinse, and hard to get to the trim edges.

When I run low I will try a safety razor, perhaps.

I have a WEISHI kit (9306-F) with razor, brush, acrylic stand and bowl, and 40 Dorco Blades all for less than NZ$30.  A good way to try retro double edged safety razor.

I've decided double edged razors aren't for me. I find:
 - It's significantly slower - takes around double the time
 - I have to make more passes. With Gilette I do one pass with the grain, one pass against the grain, then lather up again and do another pass against the grain. With this I have to do two with, two against, and each pass is slower.
 - I get more cuts, mostly under the chin

So if anyone wants to buy a Merkur 34C in perfect condition let me know.

I have a Dorco 6 plus just in this week. So far I'd say it's 80% as good as Gilette at 25% the price. I'm just about to order Dorco 3/4 blade razors because I find the 6 blade a bit tall - it makes it difficult to shave above my lip against the grain.

I have just subscribed to dollarshaveclub (in AU, they ship to NZ).
$7 (AU) per month for a four blade razor. I think that gets 4 cartridges per month.

I currently use a Fusion (Gillette 5-blade), and I am on the last cartridge of an 8 pack I bought online (which the place I bought from is now out of stock of). Those 8 cartridges lasted me (and my wife :/) nearly a year. It will be interesting to see how these new ones go. If they are even half as good, I will have a pile of cartridges spare after about 6 months.

Been using them for a couple of years, also get the 4 blades. I find them great.  You can also set it up so you only get 4 new blades every 2 months (so $7 every 2 months) which is handy for me as I only save every 3 or 4th day so only need 2 blades a month.

Has anyone tried a variety of dorco cartridges? They have 3, 4, and 6, I find the 6 a bit big. Probably going to get a 4 blade cartridge pack to try them out, then I'll do a bulk order from dorcousa via youshop or shipitto in the new year.

stevenz: I use a Goodfella safety razor in the shower 2 or 3 times a week and I get at least a month out of a blade, even if I were to not shave for a month I just end up with about 1cm of patchiness.

Safety razors are _so_ much cheaper than the usual cartridge jobs.

Sometimes I'll use the lather (bluebeards revenge) & brush, but I generally don't bother.

What do you shave? Your knuckle hair?! I get 4 (facial) shaves out of a blade, one for each edge. After that its way too blunt. Can't imagine using each edge for a week...

timmmay: I'm coming close to finishing my bulk buy of gillette fusion razors. I got a good deal of $150 or so for blades that lasted me 18 months, but the website doesn't seem to be active any more.

Now people have had a bit more time with them, how are the Shave Union and Dollar Shave Club / Dorco razors liking them?

@wasabi2k , @guv, how much slower is it using a single/double edge razor than using something like the gillette fusion? How often do you cut yourself? I found an ok safety razor intro article here, but for someone who's never used anything other than gillette it seems a bit vague. Do you need to use a brush? Oil? Gel from a can?

I've had a safety razor for nearly a month and was really hesitant for fear of permanent scarring or blood loss...

I've not cut myself yet and find that I'm now taking the same time to shave as I was with the Mach3. I simply buy some sensitive foam (Nivea) and use  brush to put it on and shave it off... When I'm done I use some cream (Nivea again)... Dead easy...

I've got a Merkur 34C razor and I've just finished with the Merkur blade and trying the Feather blade...

Good to hear it's working for you :) I got a bunch of different blades, found them all fairly similar. It could be different skin types, different techniques, or different levels of patience. I didn't bother with a brush, even though I'm told they make a difference I couldn't see how so I went without.

Everyone seems to go on about the Feather blades being the be all and end all... That's the one I'm trying now and I found the Merkur blade to be streets ahead of it... Maybe I have a dull face... Who knows...

Wow.. I've got strong hard facial hair and I get 6-8 weeks per blade on average with a Gillette Quattro disposable.

Tips

  • Very hot water
  • heat blade + Gel

Traditional razors simply cut me to shreds.
