Hi Geekzoners,


Just want to discuss supps, prices, effectiveness and value for money.


I currently am using RippedFreak Hybrid fat burner.


I've tried various pre-workouts, and can reccomend you something both high-end and low-end depending on whether you're running, weight lifting or just want to replace the energy drinks with something probably just as bad, just a lot less sugar and rotting teeth.

Yeah, it would be interesting to see what everyone uses and where they get their stuff from. Currently I buy most of my stuff through NZ Muscle and use MusclePharm combat whey as a meal supplement/replacement or after a workout. Pre-workout I use Pro Supps Mr Hyde. Haven't really looked at fat burners but would be keen to hear your thoughts on them.

Depends on what you're after.


There's the different kinda 'fat burners' and these are the ingredients that do the different things (if you're keen to learn.)


Raspberry Ketones


Felt Effects: None, buzzword product.


Good for: Nothing I can research.


Dosage: NA


Ephedra-Z or Bitter orange Extact, or Synephrine 


Felt Effects: Increases epinephrine/adrenaline levels, tunnel vision like focus.


Good for: An adrenaline high, but doesn't last long by itself.


Dosage: 10-50mg.


2-amino-5-methylheptane, DMHA, 2-amino-6-methylheptane or Octodrine


Effects: Gives a midly euphoric "high" for a limited period of time. Short lived, but very potent muscle performance enhancer and cognitive ability enhancer.


Good for: when paired with caffeine they interact to enhance the longevity of the 'high' effect.


Dosage: 75-150mg


Caffeine, dicaffeine-malate


Effects: Binds to the adenosine receptors in the brain, prevents adenosine (a natural sleep inducer) from working properly. Can be used as a performance enhancer, but not as effective as other stims.


Good for: keeping you awake.


Dosage: 25mg - 500mg




Effects: Harmless skin-tingles at high sensory areas (lips, hands, feet and face etc)


Good for: Muscle enhancer and decreases the rate of muscle fatigue


Dosage: 2 - 5gram




Effects: None


Good for: Improves blood vessel health, protects brain from stress chemical damage (induced by intensive workout), reduces muscle fatigure chemicals building up in blood, improves weight loss, supplementary to working out


Dosage: 250mg - 3gram


Hordenine, 2-methyl-tyramine.


Effects: Mental alertness, significantly reduces muscle fatigue, allows you to push harder for longer.


Good For: Increase blood pressure, stimulant effect, performance longevity enhancer


Dosage: 75-150mg

Have long term studies been done on this sort of stuff?  Seems like they can't be good for you over a long period, given they're effectively stimulants, right?  And I've only only really started hearing about all these different supplements over the last 10 years at most.  I'm genuinely interested though, I've only been working out for 6 months or so, and given I have a degenerative spinal condition I can't do as much as I'd like without injury or pain.  With stuff like this I'd be fearful that I'd hurt myself and not realise until it's too late (regardless of the inherent health risks of the products themselves).

It depends. For the non-stimulant chemicals yes.


For the stimulants, no as most of they time they're taken by semi-professional sports people who want to stay ahead of the banhammer, so the chemical composition changes accordingly.


E.G. Before DMHA there was DMAA (think Jesse Rider being banned for taking the weight loss supplement "Detonate")


The other factor in the composition changing frequently is generally if something alters your mood too much, or for too long it comes to the attention of the drug administration which in then bans it pending official trials etc.

Go do some High Intensity Interval Training.


You can naturally boost your metabolic rate by doing that.


The MR is what burns fat.


Also, when you start to exercise, your body don't burn fat. For the lazy person, it will start to burn fat after 20-60 mins of huffing puffing and sweating. For the conditioned person, closer to 10-20 minutes. So I tell everyone if you don't puff and sweat for 1 hour you ain't achieving anything (burning fat).


I don't know nothing about bulking sorry, just burning fat.


Summary: 2 ways -increase BMR, burn it directly. Obviously doing both is better.

I pretty much decided not to bother with supplements a while ago. They just seem like a good way to waste a lot of money ;-)






Have long term studies been done on this sort of stuff?  



The 2 I've heard about being reasonably well studied are creatine and caffeine. I tried creatine for a while, but decided that I don't really lift heavy enough to bother paying every month for more. I drink tea and coffee during the day and feel like I get enough caffeine so don't bother using a supplement for that either. 


Also tried protein powders for a while, but again decided after a while that as long as I'm eating right I can get enough protein without really needing them - was tracking calories\macros pretty religiously at the time so have a fair idea of protein intake per day.

Personally, I eat like a motherf&*ker when stressed and work is going through a restructure so I use it to curb my appetite, the Ripped Freak means I can stay at ~2000cals a day without starving myself.


I know other people who use DMHA to burn the candles at both end in order to run 3 jobs (1 full time, 2 part time)


I know some people who use PWO to work out and stay ripped AF. 




So different strokes. So long as you eat healthy, know your body, don't abuse the supplements and know your limits you're OK.


But, abuse them, become dependent upon them, or just be an idiot and mix them with other drugs and you're just a moron who deserves whatever comes to you.
